I am a male teacher. Just completed my 13th year of teaching. I’ve taught 1st, 2nd, and 5th grades. I can tell you firsthand male teachers are needed in elementary schools. There are many kids in school that do not have a male role model in their home. You can always tell those kids that don’t because they are the ones that want that extra attention. I feel like I have had a major impact on those kids at school! Sometimes my principal even sends me certain students that aren’t mine because she knows that I have established a male-male relationship with them.
Not sure if that answers your question about male teachers?
I too utilize the few male teachers we have to send certain kids to in times of need that aren't necessarily theirs because of how awesome they are with my kids. !
I think capable, caring, and effective teachers are worthy teachers whether they’re male or female. I do think male teachers need to be more mindful of how they conduct themselves because it seems to be male behavior that is scrutinized more in our profession, but that is a societal issue. I’ve worked with and been taught by many amazing male teachers!
I think a male teacher in an elementary setting is great! Some students have no positive male role models in their lives. The breakdown of the family unit among impoverished communities is having a huge effect on our kiddos. Seeing a positive male role model early on is so beneficial.
I’m starting my 18th year as teacher, this will be my 10th in elementary - 4th & 5th grade. This past year we had 7 male teachers on my school. 3 in PE, 2 in K, 1 in 3rd and myself in 5th. Just like any teaching position a lot depends on your temperament and personality. I can not “do” primary grades, however I love the upper elementary and Middle school. I do as a male teacher take precautions, that my female counterparts don’t usually worry about. I don’t have a student in my room without another student or adult in the room with me, I always give a “side” hug when approached by a student for a hug. Just little things.
Like you, I take deliberate steps to protect myself in ways that my female colleagues never considered. High 5’s and fist bumps only, no hugs at all, I was never the carpool parent for kids’ activities and made sure that I was never home for my kids’ sleepovers (I went to the beach). I had a family go after me once because they didn’t like a lesson that I taught on free speech and that’s all it took for me to adopt a bunker mentality
I’ve worked with several male teachers. Most have been some of the best. Sometimes it’s really good for boys to have a male teacher, especially if they don’t have a positive male role model in their lives. Some girls are intimidated by them at first, but they get over it. You usually see male teachers in secondary, but I think it’s good to have at least a few in elementary
Our male elementary PE teacher is the only male in the building! I think he is VITAL to our kids. I work in a low-income district and a lot of our kids need to see positive male role models. We have a number of male teachers in our middle school, which is great, but I would love to add more men to our elementary classrooms
That’s really sad. Our kids need role models from all walks of life!
One of my favorite all time teachers was my 5th grade male teacher. We were his first group of kids he taught. I had an awkward 5th grade year and he made it more bearable; I have always been ahead when it comes to reading. I moved to Virginia as a kid and was tested to see what I might need. I tested at college level with English/Reading. That got me made fun of for being a dork; but he sent me to help Kindergarten kids learn to read and would let me go to the back of the class and read when I’d be done early. Male teachers make great educators!
I had three male teachers in elementary school and it was wonderful! I think it is good for kids to have a variety of role models growing up. I wish we had more male elem teachers in our district now!
I have worked with AMAZING male teachers. I think with anything it's just important to have a trusting relationship with your kids so that they feel comfortable telling you if something was said or done that made them uncomfortable. But that goes for any teacher. I have had kids come to me and voice a concern about a comment or action by both male and female teachers. I don't worry about gender as much as building that trust in our classroom and school that if any teacher is inappropriate with a student they feel empowered to speak up.
I taught 5th grade for 14 years. I think kids benefit from having a diverse set of approaches and viewpoints
