A para educator is operating under your license. Discuss and document your instructions. Be very unemotional (the hard part). If the para steps out of line, especially in front of the students, take the document to your admin or the paras evaluator. Key items here: collaboration. Federal Law. IEP contract. Confidentiality. Modeling Disrespect.
If it goes to the union, so what! In my experience (just last year), I said to the union rep “I’m the special education expert at this table. If X does not comply with my requests, then X is not following the IEP and breaking federal law.” Then sit back and listen to the crickets.
OMG that's amazing advice.
I’ve learned to work around them and ignore the nonsense. Unless they want to do all my paperwork and meetings they can keep the comments to themselves. I normally love my staff but I’ve had a set that got in my last good nerve. They survived their time with me because my kids were taught well in high school and I didn’t need them. My kids did more than most of my staff. Admin was aware and apparently thought I was kidding because I didn’t let it stop me. That was until the new teacher came and refused the whole staff😂.
We are getting new admin and I already told the new principal that we need to sit down before school starts.

A few questions first—
1. What is her experience level as TA that makes her respond the way she does?
2. Is she a younger or older than you?
3. Are these encounters in front of students?
4. Is she doing something inappropriate around the students?
5. What exactly is she doing or not doing ?
I can't move. I teach a special education class that there is only 1 of in my city. I love it and am amazing at it! The VP told another assistant that she seems like she's on her way out.
D o c u m e n t these events.
“We discussed________,
I need clarification how _______,
Next class I would like to try________”
You are equals and can use interventions.
I have documented things and have talked to her many times.
I had a couple like that when I started. I explained that as the teacher this classroom was my responsibility and that I have ideas how I wanted to run things. I also told them that I was open to suggestions, but since I was the one to receive the consequence if my admin were not happy the decisions on how to run the class was up to me. If they weren’t on board I documented their insubordination.
