How do you frame your counter offers? In my case the position is new for the hiring company, so there aren't great baselines, but I know an extra 10k would make me a lot more comfortable and it's probably pretty attainable in this market... but I do feel this company is an exceptionally good fit and don't want to start off on the wrong foot.

Don't hesitate to ask for more; as someone who has spent some time on the other side of that equation, the biggest question I have when someone I've interviewed gets an offer is whether we can offer enough to get them in the door. Would never even think about the negotiation after it's over.

Most companies want you to be excited when you join. The worst case outcome is having someone join and immediately want a raise / promotion. Ask for what you want upfront. If they can give it to you, most hiring managers would rather give you an extra $10K than have someone join and bring a negative culture to the team.

Also always a phone call! Generally not recommended to m negotiate via email.

IMO - skip the long explanation and substantiation. Something to the point like: “Thank you again for the offer and your support throughout. I’m excited about the potential to work with —-. I’d really like to make this work. I’d feel more comfortable accepting the offer if the base was __ and sign on bonus was ___.” Let them respond. If they’re adverse, you can share you want to be paid fairly for your skills and your market research indicates $x is a fair number.

I had an initial discussion with a recruiter at Microsoft for a director role. She mentioned that the base salary would be $185K. That sounds very low. He likes the offer but not sure if he should negotiate for more because it’s expected?
