How do you gently tell someone that they are going to prison and this is the best offer? My client has a case where he faced a minimum of 5 years in prison (probation isn’t possible). I reviewed the discovery and it’s a factually bad case. I had another attorney review it and even did legal research and there is nothing I can do to “save him.” The prosecutor is friendly with me and he offered to reduce it to a lesser offense and it would be 3 years in prison. He did the crime but I feel bad...

Tell him they’re free to get a second opinion. You are not the client. You cannot change the facts of what they did or failed to do.

.. (continuation) that I couldn’t work anything better for him. He is a likeable client, he works and has kids and this isn’t a violent offense. I wish there was something more I could do, but I went through discovery multiple times and if I set this case for trial, he is going to be convicted.

Do you mention who your clients are in interviews? I can never tell what the right way to do this is. I usually say something along the lines of “a large client in X industry/vertical” because dropping the client name feels tacky? But at the same time, my main client is niche and knowing who is kind of vital to understand the work.

I’m new to the immigration practice, and recently submitted an I-129 for 15 H-2B landscape workers. I knew the deadline would be close, but I convinced the client that we could take the chance. The cap count was reached after we submitted, so no approval. Is there any other avenue to bring over those workers or is he screwed?

I remember when I first started working on my thesis project. My adviser asked me to get some funding for it, but he didn't give me any advice about how to do that. He just told me that if I wanted money for my project, I'd have to go through some kind of committee process and submit an application for funding from them. Sure enough, after weeks of writing applications and waiting around for responses from the committee members (who were always too busy), I eventually got approved for funding!

Would love some thoughts on what title structure makes the most sense for my agency /translates within the advertising industry. Our Project Management dept was pretty flat until recently. We’ve build out a real team — I’ll be getting promoted to an associate director level (I’d say that — that’s not what we call it) — and I want to make sure this title makes sense. Now would be the time to change it within our dept if we’re ever going to. Currently we have: (see comments)

Fellow millennial lawyers: tell me, in general terms, 1 or 2 clients you acquired and how you acquired them. I feel like the suggested strategies for developing business are always the same: network, build your brand (hate this phrase), market yourself on LinkedIn, etc. Does any of this work? Seems to me to that most business development comes from long-standing contacts (e.g. your childhood best friend is now CEO and needs legal services), so I’m curious how other attorneys developed business.

What are some ways I can support the moms and make it an enjoyable experience for them? I would love for the families to be able to come, as it is out of town.
