How do you get back into a structured routine after going on vacation? It's always awful for me. I have next week off and I'm hoping to have an easier transition into work life when I get back this time around.

I like to do some prep work before going on vacation. For example, I leave some meal prep in the freezer and book a workout class. It helps me have something setup outside of work.

Make a to do list before you go on vacation. Time block your day ahead of time if you can (8:30-10:30 - emails, etc). Prep a grocery order to be delivered when you get back and plan to do either a premade meal you can throw in the oven or takeout for dinner your first day or two back. Set up rules in outlook to filter some of your emails (I have one folder that all my emails are copied to that is basically a replicated inbox, but I’ll also set rules to move all emails with new files to one folder, etc so my inbox is more manageable and things are already somewhat organized).

I find it very challenging as well. However, my therapist did suggest me to select 2 or 3 habits from my daily work routine that I can somehow bring or resume while on vacation. I work on my schedules every night befoe I go to bed so I did that during vacation with scheduling our activities for the next day.

It's hard coming back from vacation but make a priority list and start with that first. That way you get the stuff that needs to get done first done and then the other stuff later. You feel overwhelmed bc you were gone and there is so much to do and catch up on as well as being away from the routine and just need to get back into the routine.

Yep, still one of my struggles. I feel like after spending a day on any unscheduled things/work, my routine is totally ruined. It's the same with taking a vacation.

Should I address with my line manager or HR? What are fair trade-offs for salary $s?
For context, annual reviews are coming up, but company has been clear budget for salary raises is low.

I keep outlook closed while working because the notifications are very distracting and I have this huge compulsion to respond right away. I planned to open it hourly and set alarms so I wouldn’t forget. My colleague next door mentioned politely that he could hear an alarm going off every hour. Anyone know of a solution to this predicament? I don’t see a way to make outlook hold notifications and push them through only once an hour, but there might be a way.

One of my frustrations with myself (writing it out here so I can work on it) is that I will print out something that I need, such as a traffic collision report. I will read it without actually reading it. This results in spending time without actually retaining info. Does this happen to anyone else? I’ve found that I can actually focus when I truly force myself, but often this happens after I’ve discovered an error or an important piece of information that I should have noticed earlier.

I just discovered I have vision tracking issues: my eyes don’t converge together in close-up work and they don’t track together. My brain apparently handles this by ignoring the signal from one of my eyes - and alternates throughout the day which eye signal it ignores. The treatment involves vision therapy (eye exercises). Apparently getting this fixed may help with concentration issues since my brain won’t be fighting me sitting still and reading all day. Has anyone done this? Did it help?
