Try to find ways to give them time together away from you. They could go on walks around your neighborhood or to a local park, do a craft together, make a snack together, find ways to be occupied. Definitely also have the au pair take time with the baby and you have 1:1 time with your toddler so he gets individual attention from you once per day so he feels less like he’s being separated from you.

Separate work space as much as possible. When I lived in an apartment I had my desk in the master bedroom that also had a bathroom so they almost never saw me. Now I have a house with an office on the lower floor where they generally don’t go. I’ve been WFH w/a nanny for six years (since my oldest was about 3 months.)

Agree on creating separate spaces for working. For us I couldn’t even go out to grab snacks bc it would upset my toddler so much to see me at home but not hanging out with him. Timed lunch at the same time as nap and set bounds on when I go to work and get off work to spend time with him. During maternity leave with my second, I traded off between my baby and my toddler and opted to spend most toddler awake time with him; nursed the baby and would hand her to the nanny, spending quality time with her during my son’s nap. Or, take care of both kids and have the nanny do all household chores instead including cooking and just helping out in the background. Definitely challenging so hope you find someone flexible and awesome!

My mom decided that tonight she’d confess: 25 yrs ago she told me my 1st choice college did not give us any financial aid and I couldn’t go there (so I went where we had it). She admitted I almost got a free ride but she didn’t want me to go there so she lied. I feel betrayed. Loved my school and have no regrets. Just feel manipulated.
