The women I know who've done it just give notice the same way they would before. People will talk about you, but gossip never really matters anyway. If your firm doesn't have a claw back provision, then just follow whatever procedure you would have had to follow before.
No advice about actually giving notice, but just a caution to be aware that if any of your leave was paid for by your employer outside of any federal or state benefits, they may be scummy and ask for it back depending on the leave policy. A former employer tasked me with drafting the letters to women who did not return at all or for a certain number of months after their maternity leave to demand repayment for any $ due.
Yeah, this firm has no policy requiring you to return and work a specific period of time.
Can you tie your decision to a different career, or type of law, or client opportunity? Stating the obvious, the more grace and flexibility you can show, the better chance you will have of not burning bridges. Obviously if you aren’t happy, or want to pursue a different path, your current colleagues should understand and be supportive. But how you leave will be remembered and that will be important to your reputation and future, particularly if you are in a more mid-size legal community where lawyers tend to “know or know of” each other.
Make sure your firm didn’t have a clawback provision on benefits!!! Some places have it set up so you’d have to work 30 days after maternity leave. I worked about 40 days after maternity leave and gave my Two weeks notice saying something basic.
I reviewed all the policies and there is no mention of a clawback. I wish there was a discrete way to confirm this without raising the alarm early.
