Bulk buying is the way to go. There are soo many meal prep resources out there. I like the recipes from sweetpeas and saffron. There's a reddit for meal prep as well.
If I'm reading your post correctly, it looks like you've got too much variety going on. Variety is VERY expensive when grocery shopping. My main source of protein is chicken but I toss in some turkey or beef for occasional variety. Last summer I went full pescatarian because the cost/availability of meat was too high.
Also, take a look at where you're shopping. There are cheaper grocery stores out there. I read the weekly deals thing to make sure I'm buying stuff that's on sale. AND keep an eye on the price. Some times those stickers are deceptive and the "sales" aren't as good as normal prices on products from brands you don't normally buy.
Finally, coupon like crazy! You can do regular manufacturer, grocery store or reverse couponing through apps like ibotta.
My bf and I live together and have totally different approaches, so I’ll share both.
He gets meat from Costco and meal preps two meals a week (5-ish servings of each) and they can be used interchangeably for lunch and dinner. If he eats the same thing more than once a day he gets sick of it. He buys meat and dry goods and Costco and preps 2-3 vegetables for each meal (cauliflower rice, broccoli, frozen peas are popular quick ones he enjoys).
I on the other hand do not like eating the same hot meal every day, so like to have a bunch of “pantry stuff” that’s easy to put together (eg all the ingredients for my favorite tuna salad without actually committing to making sandwiches before the day of, things like toast and frozen meals, prepped vegetables for salads) and prep a max of one meal per week. Usually it’s something warm and calorie dense because I often forget to eat throughout the day and I look forward to eating a hot meal more than a cold one.
We get our meat and dry goods at Costco (about $150/month) and probably each spend around $40 a week on groceries).
One thing that’s helped both of us a lot is getting those portioned lunch containers. They really do make it easier to just pop something in the microwave
Sorry rereading this… did not realize how many times I mentioned getting meat at Costco. Promise it’s not sponsored content haha
Pro
I meal plan for the month and then buy ingredients according to those meals. Keeps the grocery bill to around $300 for 2 people.
My base protein is almost always chicken. I buy the family packs, trim, put 2 in each sandwich bag, and freeze.
Pro
This^ buy protein in bulk and separate into meal-sized portions then freeze.
Order online and pickup.
