How do you guys actually deal with the stress from our jobs?

And please don't give me the "I work out" or I "Go for runs" tropes..that stuff does not help with the day to day stress of our industry.

How do you guys deal with it on a daily basis?

Many people are giving their opinion, I'll share what made me sane for years of working high tempo operations in combat.

1- Self care is more important than the job. If you can't function you can't perform. Know when to take a knee and recover, be open to leadership about this and encourage it with your team. They'll have your back when you have theirs. Recovery can be 10 mins or a week, it doesn't matter how long, just get well.

2- Care, but don't let it define you. Do what you can but have clear boundaries so you can recover and rebound. If you're thinking about work when you're not working you're doing it wrong. Your job is not who you are, it does not care about you. The running joke at my ops center was that the lights were powered by the souls of all of us. Do your best to do the job, but "don't let the lights steal your soul"

3- Take small breaks. No more than 50 mins of work at a time. Every 50 mins take 5 minutes and concentrate on something else for 5 mins, it can be a text to a friend, look up funny memes, whatever, just no work. The other 5 minutes do 4x4x4x4 breathing, 4 second inhale, hold 4 seconds, 4 second exhale, hold 4 seconds then rinse and repeat.

4- eat healthy, no booze during the work week. On the weekend do whatever and eat whatever. Work hard, play hard, keep clear boundaries. If you need a drink after work due to meeting a client be smart about it.

Excellent question. I used to wonder the same and here is what I’ve realized:

1. Take ashwaganda, especially if I have a view of what’s coming down the pike. It’s an Indian root powder in capsule form. Amazon.
2. Anxiety is real, especially when you don’t know. The more reps you get on tough projects, the more confidence you build and you’ll have less anxiety.
3. Diet is critical. Stress and anxiety cause acidity in your system. You can develop ulcers from high stress and poor diet. Eat more alkaline foods and drink high PH water (essentia/ smart water) to help with the diet piece.
3. Don’t make yourself feel guilty. I used to feel guilty on the weekends if I didn’t plug a few hours in. I’ve had to change my mindset and realize that those hours are mine and I will use them however I like.

Long winded, but this was a journey for me. Hope it helps.

Coping up with stress is a lifestyle, that needs to be maintained. Working in a very high pressure environment. I personally advise maintaining a healthy diet. Ensuring that you eat at the same time each day. Definitely, pursuing a leisure time activity or workout helps. Apart from that waking up early helped reduce the anxiety faced when starting work each day

Care less.

Seriously.

likesmarthelpfulupliftingfunny

P1 very good advice, also don’t care if you someone wants to do something different on a project who cares. Be less serious and really focus on how you can be an easy person to work with on a project. Don’t let your hate/distain for a project or client dominate your thinking.

like

- Don’t take it too seriously
- Have clear boundaries, like no weekend work
- Don’t think about work during time off
- Work out and run
- Sleep enough and eat healthy
- and most importantly, don’t take it too seriously ;)

SA2 - glad to hear that you are recovering! I guess there is no one size fits all approach. For me personally some of the stoic ideas helped quite well:
- Identify what you can control & what you can’t control; don’t worry about the things outside your control
- Take a View from above to remember how small you and your contributions are in the big picture and too not take everything too seriously
- Think about the worst case to picture what’s the worst outcome of certain decisions, e.g., not delivering at work can get you fired, not prioritizing your health can kill you

C11 on connection: I don’t totally understand it either but it resonates with me. I’ve heard this around 12 step meetings and also Russell Brand talks about it in his book Recovery—which I absolutely recommend. I think connecting means a lot of things. It could be going on a hike and connecting with nature. Or taking a bit of weed, which connects us in some way too, again I don’t totally understand it. But when we are disconnected, it exacerbates our duality, meaning our separation from the Oneness that we all came from, what ever that means to you. So I don’t have an answer, just more questions but it makes me want to go to meetings, because there I find a lot of extremely authentic people who spill their deepest challenges of life in a way I’ve never seen anywhere. It’s like 15 people giving a 3 minute motivational speech, Tony Robbins style, but from normal drunks that have chosen to confront their problem with courage. There is something mystical that happens in these meetings which I also can’t explain but it keeps me from “reaching for something” like a bottle and encourages me to seek help from a higher power—what ever that means to you. It’s quite amazing actually. I want what they have.

I don’t feel stressed because I don’t feel pressured because my employer and I both know I’ve been there longer than typical and I am underpaid and all the way too junior scrubs don’t have the same tact, knowledge, skill set I’ve built/acquired couldn’t replace me on the same contracts regardless of my younger managers and their MBAs maybe thinking otherwise. I could leave any day and be paid 2x

It’s all about trade-offs.

I don’t mean this in a flippant way, at all. If it’s not worth it for you, consider finding something that is more in line with your needs.

Needs include material things (a roof over your head, food) but also family time, hobbies, me-time.

Good luck finding your balance, it sure isn’t easy. 🍀 🤗

I did it, I ended up sharing the offer because it was a bananas offer and life changing move. In the end, my ego was hurting but the rest of the firm had no idea about my boss who is a bad egg. I’ll leave on a high for my rep, but let HR know everything but it likely won’t change anything anyway. In any case - looking out for me, myself and I. Go those jobs!

I am working with a post-MBA Associate on a project and this person seems to do extra work beyond what the team is asking the rest of us to do. I think during our conversations with the leadership, there were a couple of points that were brought up by the MD but that was not a concrete directive that we need to do because if it is, I would know about it from the chain email since I am staffed to the project.
