How do you guys avoid coming off as condescending when giving feedback? I’m only a second year but I am effectively in charge of a couple smaller cases. I have a new first year working on first drafts for me who I’m trying to teach what little I know. I’m struggling to tell them when they do things wrong because I don’t want to come off as arrogant and I also don’t want to bring it up with the partner and make them look bad.

Pretend like you are giving feedback to yourself and you should be fine. I like the compliment sandwich (start with compliment - constructive criticism - end with compliment).

like

I think this is it. Think about how you wish anyone above you presented you with feedback if you did something wrong or made a mistake

like

Be honest and direct. Start with an acknowledgment that you’re very junior too but based on what you’ve learned there are some things they could do to improve work product or avoid easy mistakes. I’d actually avoid giving too much praise because as a second year you likely know much more about what’s wrong than what’s right

Shit sandwich. Compliment-constructive criticism-compliment or thank you.

Depending on what they are doing wrong I usually couch any critique as being the “group’s preferred approach.”

like

Kudos to you for thinking and being concerned about this.

Honestly, half the reason I’m thinking about it is someone a year senior to me has been condescending and it leaves a bad taste.

Should I still wait for firm 2? I feel like I can’t stall anymore.. I feel like I really should give firm 1 a response this week 😮‍💨 but I don’t want to lose both offers

I don't know who needs to hear this, but I have a few former classmates and colleagues sweating over lateral interviews. Take a deep breath and relax.

First, doing these interviews does not define you as a person.

Second, take it one day at a time; if they are moving forward, they see something in you.

Third, remember that the people interviewing you are human beings. Connect with them, be personable.

Had someone lateral into our firm as a fifth year (soon to be sixth). They were kind of a retool and went from small law to the firm I’m at. They are still learning a lot of basic stuff, and I think it’s weird that the firm hired someone at that level as a retool. They sometimes ask me for help with stuff, but I’m just getting annoyed at this point. Can I just say “no” since they’re about to be a mid/senior associate who should know all of this?
