Before the appointment, I do some yoga for relaxing the pelvic floor (yogi squat, warrior 2, happy baby, child’s pose). I also ask for the smallest speculum (e.g. pediatric speculum) to be used. And remember to breathe deeply during! I had vaginismus and was able to get my first pap done with minimal discomfort this way.

Wow this is of great help. Thanks A2.
Getting pap done on the last day of my period helped a little bit (as my doc said it would) since you’re already a little more dilated than usual during that time anyway
Don’t worry about it too much! It really isn’t that bad
To be honest I don’t think the general discomfort goes away, but it really isn’t bad. I’ve been going to a new doctor who does the pap relatively quickly so that I’m not sitting there with that speculum inside me for longer than I need to. Also, a previous doctor I went to would let the speculum get warm in a towel so that it wasn’t too uncomfortable when she put it in. Try seeing if your doctor can implement these things for you!
My doctor recently said I don’t have to come back for 3 years which sounds crazy to me. I think if you have normal pap results you don’t have to get tested sooner but I’ll likely go every 1-2 years for the pap.
I’ve dealt with pain and hence always very nervous when it is time for Pap smear. I will say however, the key here is to relax. The more stiff and nervous you get, the worst it feels. I talk about it with my doctor and she’s been very helpful talking me through steps and not doing anything until my pelvis area is fully relaxed and I am breathing well. She also helps me position my legs wide enough to cause very little pain. Suddenly, it feels doable and easy. Also, just taken an ibuprofen 30 mins before if you feel like it. I trust you to get through this. Good luck!

It's never been painful for me, not sure why. My OBGYN is pretty quick in an out.
