How do you guys get out of unproductive loops? I'm constantly starting something, staring at it, switching tasks, making no progress, and the cycle continues...

Right there with you. I’m still trying to figure it out. Different things work at different times. Sometimes I just make a list and tick off each item as I finish helps keep me focused. Honestly sometimes I just recognize I need the break and I take time away. Usually I come back refreshed to knock whatever task out. Would love to hear other tactics though. Its so frustrating.

like

I have to break bigger tasks into smaller milestones. Once I finish something, I allow myself to move onto something from a different task so I don't get bored.

Its like they always say about eating an elephant one bite at a time. You have to take small chunks and get them done to accomplish the bigger things. ANything you can break down and do one small thing at a time is better than doing nothing at all.

Hello there! I find that planning each day beforehand is really advantageous. I have a journal that I write on every single night before I go to bed. Having a list keeps me in a productive state.

like

Just get some rest. Sometimes you need to take a step back and recenter or get to know yourself and your reasons why again.

Only really by accepting that that's what happened and finding something on my to-do list that is more likely to hold my interest and doing that, even if it's not the most pressing thing at the moment.

Realize 1) large or time consuming tasks seem insurmountable and 2) if you can get in an start it that hyper focus may take over.

So, break starting down into the most ridiculously small step ever (like saving the attachment to the file) and tell yourself you will take a small break once that is done. Then, do it and take the break. You can’t not take the break because then you will remember you lied to yourself last time you tried this.

Seriously, it’s like negotiating a hostage situation with a four year old.

Once you do that first thing you will hopefully realize “that was easy!” and keep going once you finish your break.

Also, group like tasks together because it can be mentally painful to switch tasks. So, have a bunch of emails with attachments that you have to open, download, and respond to? Download each attachment and save it first. Then move on to the next thing.

I try to group my day into like types of cases and like types of actions as much as possible.

To-do lists, calendars, and prioritizing tasks work best for me.

I cannot tell you how many to do lists I make in a day. I am the queen of post it notes as well. It really feels good to get something on the list done and then throw away the post it or mark it off the list. Makes me feel accomplished at the end of the day.

like

Break down the assignments into smaller, more digestible chunks and put every little one on your calendar or alarm. Alarms work really well for me to kickstart the tasks instead of just waiting around for something in me to kick in. Reward yourself with every task you get done.

This is really good advice too. I do this alot in my day to day. I make a lot of to do lists and then I break it down into small things I can get done. I just focus on one small task at a time until I have completed it. It sounds so silly but it really does work, I swear.

Do you take any meds? I felt that way ALOT before I started taking adderall. I think I need to get my dosage changed because I am feeling lately like it isn't working as well. But hoenstly the meds changed everything for me. I am way more productive now than I ever was before.

Consider moving in-house (either government or for a company—easier said than done, I know). My billables were awful because I never figured out how to get out of the loop. It’s a little easier to mask in-house. The only thing I have found that helps is to calendar ever minute of your day and close anything unrelated to the task you’ve blocked time off for. I even close my email.

Looking for actionable tips to improve efficiency. I’m a senior associate doing primarily employment litigation. In particular, writing briefs, emails, and letters takes me forever, probably because it takes me a long time to form the right sentences. [Cont’d below]

I just saw an ad for an app called inflow that’s supposed to help manage adhd and create strategies to address things like putting off and staying on task.
