Wait it out. Only exception might be weather with no sign of changing. They want that plane positioned for the next day.
Makes sense. Although I was worried about the flight crew being “timed out.” Miracle of miracles, I am on the 6:20 and got a free upgrade to 1st class! Silver lining indeed.
Use the flight aware app to track the inbound flight to understand reason for flight delay and adjust accordingly
Continued...My 7:45 pm was delayed in 1 hr increments, til when it said 11:15pm, I rebooked on a 6:20am the next day expecting cancellation....but then the damn thing did take off, at 11. I could’ve been home last night (at 2am but still...) vs still stuck in this hellhole.
get the lounge agents to "back you up" on a later flight so you have a seat on both.
I always call ( United in my case)- they’re able to hold a seat on a future aircraft for members with status. If your flights gets cancelled, they can activate the second itinerary automatically.
Did this last night out of EWR
Apparently I just haven't been asking the right questions. Next time I guess.
I generally wait it out - if I have lounge access, get some food, a drink, catch up on work, etc. I’d rather just wait. If I’m super tired and just want to get some sleep then I’ll book something for the next day and forgo trying to wait it out and just stay the night somewhere.
I couldn’t get lounge access. I had passes for the lounge but it was full and they weren’t letting day pass people in. 🙁
I usually just wait it out l
It depends on what is happening next day. Wait if something important to do or just get a hotel for the night and travel in AM.
I do one of four things in order of preference assuming no earlier flight:
1) Change to a less ideal, but more guaranteed to get me home routing
2) Consider nearby airports and drive
3) Drive all the way
4) Wait until cancelled
My past year has been awful with getting home so I do just about anything possible to get home the same day I set off.
My rule of thumb is 3 delays then I am out of there. Hotel here I come or if I have to get home I drive. But most of the time that would be a 12-14 hr drive so I am staying the night some where along the way
Ask lounge agents to rebook you on another flight or put you on standby. If that does work, I’ll wait a max of two hours. Still no boarding or takeoff in sight? I’m getting a hotel, no sense in sitting around waiting getting tired and frustrated when you can go to a hotel. Everyone learns overtime “when to call it”
