I had neglected my health thru my 5 yrs of PhD and 3 yrs of consulting, and I ended up with a large benign tumor rupturing requiring an emergency surgery and couple visits to ER and hospitalization thru COVID. I learned that you vannot take take your body and health for granted and you need to prioritize it just like how we all probably worked hard to get good grades and jobs. Even then, it still took me a full year to come to terms with prioritizing my health and putting my career in the back burner (I still got promoted early). Don't be stupid like me. You don't want something rupturing in your body to learn that lesson. That said, I did several things to get my health back: 1) get a standing desk and portable treadmill underneath. I got an uplift desk and urevo treadmill. Best $1k I spent. I walk more than 25 miles most weeks. 2) pick up yoga. Many great free videos on YouTube at 10 / 15/20/30/60 min length. Yoga requires little space and equipment. No excuse not to do a quick 10 min one even if you are busy. Yoga with kassandra is my favorite channel. 3) I got my first house and dedicated a bedroom to a home gym. I then picked up on strngth training also watching videos on YouTube. Caroline girvan is awesome. 4) Try noom. It capitalizes on positive psychology and it can help change your relationship with food. Obviously tracking weight and food daily helps as well. 5) schedule annual check ups dental appointment etc and take your goddammit sick days not just when you are sick but also for these preventive appts!! Good luck dude
Very helpful, thanks a lot! Glad to hear you are doing better.
Staying in shape part for me is about finding something to do that I really, really enjoy. It’s boxing right now… it gets me just excited to get to work. Food wise, no dietician. If I want to cut weight, I do some calorie counting but generally just focus on lots of healthy stuff. Occasional cheats.
Hope this helps :)
I've tried a lot of different ways to stay active but it's been a very bumpy road. I'm going to read up on some of these suggestions and see if something works for me.

Personally I’ve learned the older I get, the more effort I need to put in. And sometimes, if a certain routine or eating habit isn’t working for me, then maybe I can try something else.
Workout in the morning instead of pushing it after work
Wake up at 4:30 am every weekday morning, 6 am weekends and go to gym - heavy lifting session focusing on push/pull barbells and some light cardio. Me time until 8 am, mix of podcasts and chill. Very little grains, mostly animal protein and vegetables. No added sugar, candy. No alcohol except special occasions. Coffee with splash of milk only. 3 pm second workout at gym, higher reps, lighter gym session. Keep it low stress throughout the day with work. All electronics off 30 min before bed, read or zone out. In bed by 8:30-9 every night.
Having friends hold me accountable is huge. I have a group chat with a few friends where we check in on workouts and it helps eliminates excuses that I’d let myself off the hook for. When I’m busy and can’t go to the gym for an hour or longer, I just look up 20 min YouTube videos or other quick exercises (squatting to the song Flower by Moby, wall sits, quick ab workouts, etc). These are great for late nights during the week
Yeah nope

I saw a registered dietician (it was 100% covered for a few sessions at a former job) once a month, helped kick start what changes to make diet wise. I also have since mid 2021 been working out regularly (gym and at home workouts, right now at home bc of omicron) to lose weight and also help stay in shape/tone up.

Buy a peloton and jump 20min a day (or 4x a week) on the bike. Worked magically for me
Did you do HIIT classes or more LISS classes?
Myfitnesspal is a cool app for tracking and analyzing food intake. I agree with D2…find something you love to do. For me it’s cycling in warm weather, and using my rowing machine indoors in cold weather (a couple years ago it was indoor rock climbing).
I do one meal a day on weekdays, find time to go to a workout class 3-4 times a week, and do whatever I want during the weekend.

I put in an hour in my bike (indoor on a trainer or outdoors) at least 3 days a week, plus a longer ride on weekends (3-4 hours). This is a priority for me and I work to make sure my schedule facilitates this.
For diet, you need to make small changes and apply them consistently, but without beating yourself up when you miss your targets. If you don't eat veggies, you NEED to get in the habit of eating green veggies with lunch and dinner. If you drink soft drinks every day, you MUST cut that out. For exercise, the important thing initially is to force yourself to do it, even if it's just going for a walk and doing some push ups every day. Over time, that should give you confidence to try more things. Eventually, you'll hopefully find a sport or routine (tennis, crossfit, yoga, whatever) that you love and get addicted to and prioritize.
I’ll make it simple. Burn more calories than you consume. That was a recommendation from my cousin who competes in fitness competitions.
