How do you handle aggressive, hard-ass leadership?

I was on a group strategy call and our VP says "OK *account manager* (me), we have decided that your new focus needs to be electronics, do you understand that?" He said it in a very stern tone of voice. Well of course I understand it because it was my f*cking idea that I brought to his attention prior to Christmas.

IMO, this guy does nothing. He steals the ideas of his team members and then acts like tyrant in front of people.

Leave. It means the VP is threatened by your talent and you can’t “outshine the master” so to speak unless you’re in a good environment.

QUIT. Got hired on at a startup. Boss didn’t train me, there was legitimately no training tbh. And the team was mostly pretentious assholes. The few team members that seemed ok I’d ask for help. On my 2nd week working there supervisor told me he was concerned cuz I’m asking for help and taking time away from other members.

I sent him an email I quit. And never looked back. And I’m so happy I did that.

I think you should just either quit or find another job. Trust me that place isn’t worth it.

I did that 3 months ago, worked for a directionless, arrogant and substandard products company.
Currently unemployed and working on skills to an advanced level.
Hoping to crack some interviews shortly.

Def leave. So many frauds in leadership roles.

Currently in a very similar situation. Following this thread. I’m making moves to get out of there currently interviewing. These managers just create a lot of unnecessary stress and frustration.

like

Do we work for the same company?! In all seriousness, these situations are horrendous to live in and because of that I am looking to get out also.

In my experience, there is never any real point in getting into confrontations with your leaders. Just build an exit strategy and go from there

The best way to make sure people know is while everyone is present make it evident whose idea this is and or in the moment name and shame that person. Say that your happy for them to use the idea but tell them this in a stern manner and say the credit should be yours etc etc. When working always remember your all in the same team the more you act straight to the point rather then always moan after a meeting to your team mates that they stole your idea etc. Goodluck ... always be stern back show them the importance of your place in the team.

Read “extreme ownership” by Jocko Willink, it opened my eyes. There’s a big gap from a good idea to great implementation/execution of a plan. Not saying your boss is in the right but if your idea turned into great results then this is something you should be immensely proud of and your boss did what they needed to get the results. If you went completely unrecognised, then it’s a case of understanding your own personal position and I would suggest an industry mentor that you trust to bounce ideas off, nothing worse than feeling like you didn’t get recognition. Just remember as complex as some situations are perceived to be, we all have a choice on who we work for and someone out there will recognise this.

These types of people should not be in management. I would be making exit plans

Move on. Don’t waste your previous career time with a boss who leads like that.

My goal is to never be on leaderships radar other than a “good job” every now and then. It’s an appeasement strategy just acknowledge the request and continue on winning regardless of the ask. Obviously shift focus but do it in your own way.

like

Sounds like your VP is not a leader and most likely an insecure person outside the office. I don’t think quitting is the right thing just yet. Take the time to find your next role and focus on the culture when speaking to the hiring manager. As far as your role there, I would speak to the VP with your manager/director present and ensure all know you had that very same idea last year.

I've outlasted many a bad manager. Patience and value creation wins out over time. Only you can decide if it's worth it to stick it out.

How do you handle aggressive, hard-ass leadership? Financial independence. Then you can think up all kinds of snarky questions and comments during Zoom sessions and drop them on your colleagues to see if they laugh out loud with their mic on.

Precious, not previous.

Last week team dynamics took a turn for the worst (even tho in each retro the team always commend each other, you would think team work is great). Team members get agitated with each other for being slow. Team members coming across rude and brash (the same ones are difficult to get hold to offer support, time is money is what someone said💰, the craziest was the client accidently sharing her whatsapp screen, commenting on people's feedback to what she was presenting OMG 😲 How was your week?

I am so sick and fed up with some of the older clients at my job. I know it's my responsibility to take care of them, but they're just so sexist sometimes.

Curious, is it common practice to advise managers *not* to remain in correspondence with a recently terminated employee? An employee was just fired *without* cause (headcount reduction) and has been trying to contact his former manager to stay in touch, etc. The manager has not responded to the employee yet.

I’m a manager and one of my direct reports makes more than me. It really bothers me. Anyone else been in this situation before? What’s the best way to handle it?

I love working at the bookstore and I'm proud to work with such a large group of people from different backgrounds. I'm really happy we're all here. But it probably isn't the best idea to get someone to reshelve books when they haven't been taught how to categorize them properly. It's like I spend most of the day following one of my coworkers around and discreetly fixing what he works on. He's a great guy, very personable, but wow is it frustrating.

I have been working in an interim role as a portfolio manager. I was promised that the role would be mine. However, after doing the job for 2 months, I have been advised that we might not get the funding for the role and I might not get the raise and the title but my responsibilities will be the same.

Its a political minefield.

How should I back out elegantly that I need to be compensated fairly and competitively from this mess without burning any bridges

Hi all - please set me straight. Am I on par with comp?

AdTech Sales - Account Executive. No experience in Sales, but was in client services with my company for 10 years.

Base 142 with 100% match, so 284 OTE. Accelerators after 100, which doubles up to 125. (101 to goal will garner 102 in commission, 105 will 110, caps out at 125 so max is 150% commission)

Q1 is looking good already so feel good about things. But curious if this is a good deal.

Hello, first post here. Outside sales, merchant services/card processing. I’m primarily a welder but I work 4 10-hour shifts typically then I try sales the last three days. I’ve done it long enough to where I’m confident and comfortable going to new businesses, establishing some rapport with business owners. But it seems like a lot of businesses see this as a waste of time, even adding services and cutting costs. I guess either I’m looking for advice or considering not doing this anymore.

Curious for all the VP Sales types - what is a healthy average attainment for your team? Ours is hovering around 55% to plan for Q1 and as a rep, I'm feeling discouraged since our comp plan has decelerators built in (ie. 55% to plan only gets you ~25% of your OTE commission).

What are some good ways to get it through to management that raising quotas and carving out territories to add AE headcount (while reducing SDR coverage) may not solve the turnover problem they're starting to have?
