We do a whole bathroom break for 10 minutes during Mid-morning. Then I have preselected times of the day students are allowed to go. Usually during transitions, recess, lunch, and end of the day.
6th graders have to sign out they have been vandalizing the bathroom.
Kindergarteners, we do a group bathroom break, usually just before recess times.
1st grade...we take whole class breaks 5 times a day (they have smaller, untrained bladders). Students who ask to go beyond that are allowed to go, but they have to pay me a Dojo Dollar. I explain to them that they’re not paying me because they have to go to the restroom, they’re paying me because they didn’t follow directions and try to go when they had the opportunity. You would be surprised at how many change their mind about having to go when Dojo Dollars are on the line! There are, of course, always exceptions. If a parent lets me know their child needs to go more often, has digestive issues, or is too shy to go when other students are around, I don’t require them to pay. The rest of the class understands that these students have a reason for needing to go more often; I’ve never had more than 2 in any given year.
