How do you handle being a busy small firm, taking care of the business side, managing client matters and reviewing/revising associate’s work? I feel like I’m drowning!

That sounds about right 🤣 I have a partner so we share responsibilities depending on what’s going on but it’s still a lot. Maybe you need to hire an office manager?

like

Don’t be, we’ve gone through about 5 paralegals in about 4 years, it takes time to find the right person or someone who doesn’t decide to change their minds about being in the law lol We’ve opted out for taking a pay cut and hiring another associate instead, due to our circumstances it just makes more sense

Outsource what you can - billing, bookkeeping, insurance, etc. Delegate between you and the other attorney what works best for you and then schedule all the other tasks. If you know you'll have to review something from your contract attorney, schedule it like a meeting and honor the appointment.

Hire more.

I always make a schedule and try to stick to it. Also, delegate tasks. Hire more people if you think work is becoming too much.

like

Scheduling blocks of time for certain tasks works for me. I do substantive work (ie things that require critical thinking) early in the morning through mid-afternoon because this is when I’m fresh. I return phone calls and deal with “running the business” issues from ~3:30 to 5:30 as these tasks are less taxing for me. Late evening I figure out my schedule for the next day.

helpful

Can you automate a lot of routine things? I’m thinking intake, scheduling, client billing etc?

How many attorneys at firm?

Two partners and two contract attorneys.

My advice - outsource as much as you can! Let me know if you want to chat, I represent small firms as outside General Counsel. Good luck!

Scheduling / hire someone.
Dedicate one day a week to each thing without flexibility.

You should hire more employees, OP. Do you have a para or assistant? If none, I suggest you hire one.

Anyone working on pfizer project?

Client onboarded a new manager almost a year ago but the resource still pulls the “I’m new card.” I am SO tired of their growing attitude to let things crumble instead of escalate, have tough conversations, and pretending they don’t know what they are doing when we’ve been having the same conversations 20 different ways and behind closed doors they understand and discuss the issues. Personal life is a mess and I am losing patience bringing solutions and documenting all of these issues.

My current role is hybrid with at least two days a week in office. However, with the potential economic downturn, I'm considering holding on to the role to supplement my income.

I'm new to the overemployed movement, so I'm evaluating the feasibility of holding onto the hybrid role and the remote position.

I am evaluating an opportunity to join a small firm (4 attorneys plus staff) as an associate but not on salary. Rather, I’d keep a portion of the firm’s collections on matters I work on, and I can choose my rate for my own clients (and would give a portion of those collections back to the firm). Sounds like in time I’d be able to participate in profit sharing program. Curious if others have worked in a similar situation and what pointers you have.

Q for associates in boutique litigation firms: When you’ve drafted a complaint/motion/brief to be filed, do the partners allow you to actually sign the filing in your own name? For context, I’m a new associate at a class action firm where there’s ample opportunity to do substantive work & pursue your own case ideas from the get go. Today, I’m getting ready to file a complaint I drafted when a partner told me to remove my signature & insert his instead. Is this standard?

I want nothing more than to start my own practice but feel like I don’t have both the management skills (just starting my second year at a large firm) nor the business skills to do so. That has me thinking that I probably need to go work at a smaller shop to learn the ropes for a while. I understand the pay would be drastically different, but believe its worth it to build those skills. My issue is finding these opportunities? smaller firms obviously don’t market jobs like the larger firms.
