How do you handle not getting a promotion or bonus based on subjective reasoning? Would you stay with the firm? Context: Outperform my peers and exceed my goals, yet still denied.

Based on the two points of feedback you received, I'm expecting you to fall into one of the following categories. Let me know if any of these seem to fit your situation 1. You're overqualified and bored, which is frustrating your peers who may be appropriately qualified for their roles (it should be challenging, otherwise you're not growing) - in this situation, it's best to look for different opportunities elsewhere, because advancing to the level you need to feel properly challenged will be too large of a career leap within your current organisation 2. You're actually stretched too thin because you feel obligated to pick up the slack off your underperforming peers, and they resent you for it - in this situation, it may be better to move into an individual contributor role, where the work expected is geared towards a single person rather than a team's output 3. You're not a good culture fit - in this situation, you might want to move to a different line of service or to a completely different organisation 4. You don't enjoy the work you do, but it comes easy to you and pays well - in this situation, break free of the golden handcuffs and find something that excites you and challenges you 5. You're the star employee that got screwed over and turns toxic - in this situation, get out now before you hurt your professional reputation and find somewhere better to work with a clean slate

Based on your advice and a few others, I will continue to hone in on my interpersonal skills among my peers. Thank you- for your support

Based on what you’ve said I believe this is a personality issue that’s negatively impacted your ability to move forward. The whole “Giving out unsolicited advice or feedback” is probably more of a “This guy constantly feels the need to comment on things that don’t pertain to him.” It comes off as arrogant and no one likes a know-it-all. I don’t see why else people would be complaining about you. I’ve experienced this on a couple occasions. Once with a Manager that no one could stand because of that sort of attitude. Many times he would be so confident about things but was just wrong. Also, based on tone here it seems that you thought you had this promo in the bag and can’t wrap your head around the idea that these other factors could have a negative impact.

like

The interesting element was that I did not originally seek promotion as I felt that I did not have the experience. However, based on what I learned I felt the whole ordeal was not equitable. I understand and have learned to keep my ideas of improvement to myself but based on the overall consistency of the process - there are concerning gaps.

Ermmm sounds more likely that you have a self awareness problem

like

Could it also have happened in front of leadership on an engagement? I mean, they may notice it more than you think too, outside of complaints from others.

If the context is true, without any interpersonal conflicts, I’d absolutely leave.

The unsolicited advice was peer to peer. An example would be that a junior consultant made glaring errors in grammar and consistency. I would coach them through the matter to train them with what to look for next time. However, I do not have such authority. As a senior engineer mentioned, I come off as a know it all.

That happened to me. I brought up my objections to my CC. Asked him what others who had gotten promoted had done differently. He couldn’t come up with anything. I pointed out all of the things that I did accomplish that year and he said that it wasn’t enough. I told him if my best wasn’t enough that I possibly didn’t belong in the industry and I should start looking for another job. He got very concerned about that and he told me to wait a few weeks later he told me that he’d spoken to leadership and I got promoted. Sometimes you really just need to fight for yourself but also be willing to leave you should and you know your self worth even if other people don’t

No. You leave. Your only consideration at any firm is the scope and speed for YOUR growth not theirs.

Ha thank you, we will see what happens.

Need more context. Usually they don’t withhold bonuses to people who have outperformed their peers or exceeded goals. Anything else you can think of..?

like

No that is the infuriating part of this ordeal. They would not even address the complaints in a thematic matter. Just that there are complaints. I was not allowed to provide my context or even know the complaints.

OP how long of you been with the firm? Do those who were promoted have the same approximate tenure as you?

like

I have been with the firm about two years. Those who were promoted has less tenure than I did.

like

Op if you’re as good as you say then start looking for a new job. You should be able to manage 10ish hours a week to job searching while still performing above average. I did this after a similar situation, significantly outperformed peers, rated top in my class, got the top bonus but passed on promotion. To managers 2 post i was 1,4 & 5. So I focused 70% of my energy to job searching, it took 6 months but I got my dream job and doubled my salary. DM me if you want to talk

helpful

Okay, I think the consensus is to leave to a better fit firm and to take these experiences with me so I do not repeat them. I will take you up on that DM offer as well. Thank you

Do you know you’ve outperformed peers, as in that’s the feedback you have gotten? If so, do you have a network of people advocating for you? Also, are goals generic as in all at your level have them, or are these goals you have set? In the case of the latter, are they stretch goals or is it possible the perception is that your goals aren’t ‘stretch’ goals so exceeding them is perceived as not as difficult? A lot of potential variables, but like others have said, if you are truly outperforming and this is understood, it may be the right time to look for opportunities where that value is recognized.

Good context. In that case it’s definitely worth evaluating your options. If you have a supportive coach or mentor maybe they can help, either with pushing your case, or understanding where to disconnect is between your delivery / performance and results as far as progression. I was in a similar position previously, and truthfully for me despite this my conclusion was that the group I was aligned with was not the best fit, despite high performance and all of the other factors. Through networking I found new opportunities internally that included mentors and coaches who recognized some of the issues I had experienced. Since then my progression accelerated, but was definitely thanks to support with my expanded network. Best of luck, and you’ll come out the other side just fine.

Leave. I’ve underperformed and did not hit my goals but still got both a bonus and a raise

If I have learned anything from this thread- it seems you get along with everyone and are making an effort. Do you feel you didn’t deserve your bonus and raise?

As others have said, it sounds like a soft-skills and culture fit issue. I have struggled with this as well. I’m very high-functioning autistic, and although I don’t have many obvious symptoms I struggle with the interpersonal stuff. Honestly, I piss people off and they assume I am a jerk. I may be hitting the limit of where my career can take me because of it. If you can find a place that is a true meritocracy, you’ll do great. (AND TAKE ME WITH YOU!!!)

Sure
