Depends on ages and your community. Mine are 5 and 7. We have the HOA pool on our street. We hire a college student as a summer nanny at about 20$/hr and the kids spend half the day at the pool with neighborhood friends. As they get older, they’ll also do a 3wk overnight camp ($$$).
Other people do day camps, summer nanny shares, grandparents, etc. It gets easier as they get older. Somehow it never gets cheaper.
I like the summer nanny route because it gives us all a more relaxed summer. The kid can have organic friendships. I don’t have to do a morning drop off or evening pick up. The nanny can take the kid to swim class or gymnastics or whatever. Sometimes even start dinner. Ours have included 30-45mn of math and reading each day to avoid the summer slide. I don’t have to stand there in work clothes and sunscreen up a 5yr old at 7:30am before a camp that’s overpriced barely contained chaos. (As a survivor of them, summer day camps can be really overstimulating for introverted kids, btw.)
That said, it may be less financially sensible than camps with one vs two kids - and I promise your kid will survive either option.
