Time to leave bro
I was in the same boat - got fucked hard. But my work/life is lit and I'm up for senior so not gonna bother. If pay increase isn't good @ senior in leaving this bitch.
Jeebus, 50k... ways to negotiate, flaunt your contributions to the firm (state it in dollar amount of revenue), flaunt your salary letter from competitor firms or prior employment if higher, flaunt aspects of your job that requires a learning curve where if you leave it will cause them inconvenience to hire and train someone else. Lastly, tell them how much you love your job but would like to be compensated accordingly. Be positive, asked very directly, what is it they want you to do, to accomplish, to get more pay, do them all. Keep in mind if other people are getting paid 50k for doing the same kind of work you do in the firm, you really can't be asking 65k, be realistic in your demand, do you think you can get a job, next door over, for 65k, within a month?
My firm schedules a compensation discussion annually. So I meet with one partner and we discuss at a scheduled time. It's as simple as that.
Yeah we have that too but when that happens raises etc have already been decided
Assurance, we have annual discussions after we've been rated... but again, those people have no say in my compensation, they just report it to us.
I would ask the recruiter maybe who to talk to? Or your counselor if you are comfortable asking them who they would talk to
Time to make a move. Go somewhere that you'll be fairly compensated.
Also depending on your region - starting in the $50k range is 100% in line with public accounting salaries. EY SE area staff start in the 50's
I have a feeling that OP is not a new, not very experienced hire. If you are teaching managers stuff, and that's not being recognized by partners - well, they ALREADY got you for $15K less than you initially asked! And you AGREED! So they think that you will just take what you are given and keep doing what you are doing. If I were you, I would ask myself - is the pay the only thing that I'm unhappy about in my situation? If yes - make a long list (with many detailed examples) of things that you do that go above and beyond your role (and highlight your contribution to the firm) and schedule a sit-down with a partner. If compensation is not the only thing - I suggest to start looking ASAP and DO NOT SETTLE next time! Good luck!
Was this renegotiated salary following your year of service in writing or hiring person agreed in good faith but no paper trail? Also, you are teaching managers and considered unappreciated, yet your reviews say partially met expectations. What is the disconnect there?
Thank you! All very helpful advice!
Who would you even talk to about that?
EY 1, my question exactly. I've had 2 managers since then so original people involved aren't even in my Business Unit anymore
Do you still work with the people that hired you? Or does the HR person who told you about the 1year clause still work there?
The people I initially reported to have gone to different offices and do not work with me at all. The recruiter I had discussions with is still there but I wouldn't think he would have any authority on it. It's frustrating because I sit there and TEACH regional Managers how to perform simple tasks and I take on more than role demands and I'm constantly overlooked.
Thanks for the advice!
I got screwed the first year despite 14 positive recommendations from partners saying that I was under appreciated for the work I did. They still have me a rating of "partially met"!!! I was furious. This past review I was hoping to get a better rating after management had been reconstructed and I did, but still not what it should have been and a shit "raise". I'm just now making 50K gross. Not 51 not 52. Just 50! I asked for 65 when I started!
What market are you in?
I'm internal Client Facing. So I'm constantly helping partners in all different BU's Audit, Risk, Performance, AS etc and offer to be on every project that I end up running. It's frustrating to see so many higher ups that have little to no technicals skills get paid handsomely because of their title or who they know within the Firm . It's insanity
