It's always been a dream of mine to work at Google, specifically as a UX designer (currently transitioning into UX from visual design). I've been so afraid to apply to any jobs with UX title, Google or not, because I'm always doubting myself and telling myself I'm still under-qualified.
UX designers & hiring managers, what are the skills a designer must have to be "qualified" for a UX position? Keywords on resume? Certifications? Thank you all in advance!

Build more things. You won’t become legitimately better until you face unique problems to solve. The issue with a lot of UX publications and medium articles is that they often make sweeping assumptions which won’t prove helpful long-term as the problems to be solved change all the time
Create your own briefs for websites you visit to try to make them better. Then work towards achieving the goals of the brief. Start small like components of a site or just a page. Then work on larger tasks like a full site or an app.
I’ve been reading a lot of medium articles (UX collective, UX planet, prototypr to name a few publications) which I think has helped me a lot. So I think that can be a good start. Other than that I think it’s interesting to read case studies where someone has taken a product and re-designed it. When it comes to projects in work I always try to see what the other successful products are doing and try to see if I can apply that to whatever I’m designing.
Thanks for your suggestions! Appreciate that ☺️☺️
Don’t forget to do proper user research and testing with whatever projects you end up working on. The fastest way to learn is through being taught by the people you’re designing for.
