How do you keep up with your non-billable tasks, while still hitting your hours? I delegate as much of these tasks as I can, but they still take up a good portion of my day. For reference, I spent about five hours today preparing a customized report for a client (although these reports are time-consuming, we never bill for them). I also had a 30 minute call with a partner related to business development. How am I supposed to get any actual work done? Any tips or tricks that work for you?

Why aren't you billing for that work?

like

Entirely agree with this

I would split these two examples.

Business development comes on top of your billable hours, always. It also takes more time the more senior you get. A way to think about this might be that this will earn you extra points on your business plan if and when you become eligible for elevation.

The report for the client seems to be fake non-billable. That time should be billed so you can profit and written off without affecting your realization rate. There is an economic difference between having agreed with a client not to charge them and letting the fee earner who works on it suffer. Is there someone at your firm that you could speak to about this. Does it happen regularly?

like

I think 80:20 is a reasonable split. Lately, I’ve been more like 60:40, which isn’t great. Any suggestions for maximizing billable time, especially if you have a lot of non-billable stuff to get done?

I would try to Bill your time for working on the report in another manner. Like reviewing x, analyzing issue y, etc. instead of drafting the report.

Hi all. I’m making a career shift from graphic design to project management. I’ve spent the last 3 months interning as a PM at a small (<15 people) marketing agency; reported to our account manager, worked closely with the co-owners; exceeded expectations. I received a full-time offer: head of PM, reporting to one co-owner, on equal footing with my summer supervisor; $40k base. Looking at local industry standards, average sits around $75k base. Can I reasonably negotiate and ask for $60k base?
