Somehow separate your emotions from this decision
Based on what you know of your likes/dislikes , strengths/ turn ons / turn offs
Really build out for yourself what are awesome criteria for your next role
What are the must haves and nice to haves
For me it was:
- tech industry
- location
- type of content I’m working with
- the people I work with
- some amount of comp
Those were the musts
Nice to haves were
Less travel, work life balance, path on direct reports, etc etc etc
You gotta build this list
And then measure the roles your looking at against the list...don’t make an emotional decisions...make an informed decision
Pros and cons list. Identify what you’re feeling and what red flags you saw as well. Could be nerves but writing things down helps consolidate your thoughts so you can think logically
You convinced me, OP.
Go forth and conquer
for the world is small
and you are the giant
and in every step
you take will make the ground shake
as it rises
to meet you
These are all good points. I think I’m just scared because I thought I’d be at Accenture for at least 3 years and now I’m leaving after only a year because they didn’t live up to expectations. So I think I’m just scared of making the same mistake but with greater repercussions since I’m moving.
A1 totally aware of that. Most people have just kind of taken what they could because they couldn’t expand on the skills they really wanted. Most leads within my practice of interest left because they were unable to find projects in the area of interest. So it’s definitely time to move on which is why it’s so important for me to make sure I go someplace that will truly allow me to get the skills I was hoping to gain during my time here.
Also understand what you value (money, work/life balance, culture, growth opportunities, etc) and why you want to leave first
It’s a very personal decision. I just went though same situation. What are your top 4-5 values in life now and over the next 5 years? I considered considered career trajectory, family, health, personal growth, work/life balance in my decision and decided to make the move.
Make sure to also have a backup plan in the case things don’t work out. Hope for the best and plan for the worst.
When the money is enough
OP: what were your expectations of ACN?
Made similar decision recently as a senior Analyst. Definitely make a pros and cons list and I'm sure something will pop out to you as most important. For me it was type of work/skills development for future career path
OP, I am feeling the exact same about an offer I have. For me it’s mainly the nerves but then I’m second guessing what is making me so nervous and not as excited. Probably just too risk averse
D1 from a pros and cons standpoint, I think that’s me too. Not that I’m risk averse necessarily but this is such a huge risk if it goes wrong.
A2 that’s what I value in my next move is the type of work/skills development/salary
A1 that i could gain enough skills in my function of interest so i could leave and enter industry at a higher level
OP: As you know, consulting is know for accelerating skills development more than most industry jobs (with plenty of exceptions). So unless you are leaving for an industry job that has a solid track record of nurturing skills development, I suggest thinking through if you could have done things differently at Accenture. A good question to ask is: are there any people in my practice or level developing the skills I want? If so, then there might be more actions you can take. An example being: at certain levels, it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. Being super proactive, persistent and lucky helps people get what they want. If not, makes sense to move if you don’t seen a clear path to your development goals.
Even if you don’t stay, at the bare minimum you can use this reflection when you start your next gig and do the best you can to make the opportunity work. </Rant Over>
