How do you know when you deserve a raise? I’ve been working as a real estate closing attorney for 4 months making 80k in Atlanta GA. With rising rent prices and what not I feel like I could really use a raise, besides that I do good work. Part of me feels like I just need to be grateful that I have a job and then another part of me doesn’t want to fall into the trap of undervaluing myself.

I can’t speak what your value is, but my guess is that the request won’t be well received. Normally, raises are considered annually and I suspect your employer expected that they wouldn’t be revisiting a comp package after such a short time period. I’m not saying that gives you your answer, but I think it’s part of what you have to consider.

Yeah I also get the feeling that it’s early in the job but my responsibilities seemed to have grown in the short time I’ve been here. I’m kinda having buyers remorse that I didn’t negotiate more at the outset.

Agreed with A1. At least in my experience, raises are usually given annually and are generally set in advance, or at least the expectation is set in advance. Seems odd to ask for a raise only 4 months into a role, that close to your start date your current pay should’ve been something you negotiated from the outset.

Big law associates make more per year of experience. Outside of big law, I think compensation is comparable or better than non-big law firms.

The work life balance, culture/management style, and exit opportunities are better across-the-board, though.

Increase in cost of living is not what businesses take into consideration when determining what you are worth to them

Raises are considered annually. Unless you are CONFIDENT you’re doing an incredibly stellar job and have suddenly taken additional responsibilities that we’re not in the job description, wait at least 6 months and request a mid year review

Hey Philly folks. Thinking of taking a role at 160 over 90. Is it really as bad as they say?

I am starting a 4-months internship at a company B in January. However, I just heard from a company T that they will interview me for their full time position.

Company T is paying me way more (twice) than Company B. And I like company T more. However, they want me to start working in February if I get this position. If I end up getting the offer, I will have to quit my internship at Company B, almost immediately after I begin the internship.

Is this okay?

Has anyone ever asked to renegotiate their salary after starting a job? I’m 2 months into my new job and I have far more responsibilities than what I was told. It’s a lot different than what was relayed in the posting and during the interviews. Additionally, they hired my counter part in as a senior manager which is at least $30k more than what I make. My peer has more experience so I expect that but I feel that I should be paid more, however I don’t want to leave a bad impression… any advice?

HR was not willing to pay more than this even though it is just 20% hike from my current salary. But I accepted the offer as i wanted it badly. Now I got offer from start up as well (1) , can i still ask her to consider the 2nd offer and pay me accordingly? Or it will lead to offer cancelation:(
