I’ve never met you but I’m really worried about you. I’ve found the easiest way to stop negative thoughts/emotions is to consciously cut yourself off when you start to feel them peeking through. Over time you’ll get better and better at redirecting them into positive thoughts. For instance: “Gee, xyz really sucks. What are some discreet steps I can take to attempt to make things better?”
I wouldn’t adopt a pet if I was you, that would just give you even more reason to stay at home (trust me, their cute faces can really suck you in). Have you considered joining some groups on Meetup or an adult sports league?
I’d also consider talking to someone. I hit a real low point a couple years ago and talking to someone was a huge help. They didn’t have telehealth apps for that at the time. I strongly recommend it whether online or in person. It was insane how much time I was spending dwelling on negative ish instead of reharnessing my time and energy to make things better.
Thank you, D1. You must be a very nice person. Your recommendations inspired me.
A pet is a lot of work, but I got a dog 9 years ago for emotional support. Best thing I ever did. Having her forces me to go outside every day and face the world, even if just briefly. The biggest concern is do you have care for the pet in place if you travel for work.
@EY 2 That’s very smart! I will definitely do this. Thank you.
Get some therapy and consider medication. It can change your view of the world significantly.
I have a pet and I love her to pieces. It helps with my stress.
Join a meetup group instead before you take on the huge responsibility of a pet especially with our crazy consulting lifestyle. Getting a pet can make you more homely as you can't always go out our stay out late if you need to take care of your pet, especially a puppy. Get some human interaction at the gym, Starbucks or a meetup group first.
Good luck OP. It's not you. Humans are a societal animal and not meant to be lonely for long periods of time. It's proven that loneliness exhaserbates health issues and shortens your life span.
The power of now saved my life when I was in the same situation as you. Please read it. I was desperate and it transformed my entire life so dramatically. I don’t want to know what life I would be living if I never read it. It’s concepts permeate every aspect of my life now and I’m so happy
a pet for emotional support. But I’m worried if I can fulfill all the responsibilities to take care of him/her well.
