How do you like to explain to your less science-inclined friends what you do for a living?

I literally tell them I'm a mad scientist, they love it haha it works especially with this couple that has a small kid and he wants to be "just like me" when he grows up

I don't??? They know I work in research but everytime I try to explain what it is that I do, they never really seem interested. They're my friends, tho, so I love them

I usually just tell them I'm a scientist and leave it at that. If they want to know more, I'll go into more detail about what kind of scientist I am.

I like to pretend that I work in a clone-making factory where we get people's 23andMe DNA samples and make copies of them to keep for a future revolution. It's raised a few eyebrows here and there but most people accept this answer and move on lol

I say that I'm a professor and while that's not just what I do, it's the easiest explanation. They usually don't want to know the nitty gritty details because they're boooooring (to them, at least)!

I tell them that I dedicate myself to one of the things that the characters in The big ban theory do, that their mission is to guess who I am.

I always make a joke out of that, I tell them that I dedicate myself to saving their children's world because theirs doesn't matter to me since they are already in it hahaha.

I am a person known for talking a lot and for lengthening my explanations in any field, I would like to explain what I do in a shorter way but I am an astronomer and I believe that there is no short way to explain everything I do.

Currently a consulting manager. Got a startup offer and looking for negotiation advice. If you’re offered a job with salary range $150k-160k and equity range 30k-20k to select from, can you come back with a counter and ask for something out of the range? For example, could I ask for $170k and 25k shares?

Actual numbers are hashed. New to startup/tech negotiation. Appreciate any help. Thanks

Hello Sharks
Off topic: I am planning to buy or book a car by end of this quarter. I can spend upto 20 lacs max. So suggest me a good car.
Also, is it worth spending upto 20 lacs on a car? Why asking because constantly gets feedback from everyone includes friends, family and wife that live your life and don't think much if you can afford. I don't know if i can afford it not. But I am considering one time as well as running cost. My CTC is more than 35 LPA.
