How do you make the most of legal networking events without seeming too eager /disingenuous but also making sure to have meaningful (maybe even memorable) encounters?

Be human. Go up to people who are standing by themselves and introduce yourself. Or when you're in line for a drink or food, introduce yourself and make comment that you hope the wait is worth it . Ask them questions about themselves. Don't go to networking event when you need something. Connect on LinkedIn during the event if you had a nice convo and send a DM saying it was nice to meet, blah blah blah. Keep up your LinkedIn regularly so you stay top of mind with your network.

We're all a little awkward in this industry and tend to overthink a lot. I often go to events and have to say to myself "just be normal!" Lol Eventually, you go to enough events and you'll find that you're actually pretty good at talking to others. Good luck!

I recently heard advice to try to really connect with only a few people rather than "work the room." Have real and connecting conversations that aren't just small talk. People love to talk about themselves so ask questions and then actively listen. Take a business card and write notes about the person on it. Then after the event send an email to them and include something personal/connecting from your conversation. Ask a follow up for coffee or lunch.

This sounds obvious, but try to remember the people you meet. You would be so surprised at how many attorneys you meet at these things who will introduce themselves every time like it is the first time. These people will never get cases from the people they met networking.

Hoping for some advice here!!

I’m a senior sales person that just left my first job (where I was ranked top 10% in sales, worked for 5 years, qualified for presidents club 3 times & was very well known & respected) for a new company that will definitely be better, but I am starting over. Also, working from home for the first time (last job deemed “essential”).

What are some things you all have done to stay motivated during the climb of starting over? Also when learning to work from home?

Due to inflation at its highest rate since 1982, I feel that I am not being paid enough. I can’t afford things on a day to day basis and I think I can make the same amount of money in gig jobs for cash downtown. During the Trump administration I was doing just fine financially - now it costs me so much just to get to work. Is it appropriate to have an inflation conversation with my bosses or should I just pick up shifts as a bartender at night - I need to make about 600 more a month to make it.

I’m an associate media director making 108k in NYC and wondering if agency folks are seeing an annual salary % increase in times of Covid? In my last agency it was automatic, every year we would get an increase but not sure what the process is currently. Also I feel guilty and somewhat selfish to even ask since I know I’m very privileged in these times, but I’ve been putting in more hours since I’ve started wfh - 5% increase seems fair to me. Promotions/new hires have resumed now too.
TIA!
