If you’re going to a new employer, the best tactic in my opinion is to know the salary range of the position you’re interviewing for, do your best to wow them in the interview, and then to ask a little bit above the top of the salary range if you think you can justify it (often based on years of experience and credentials, but if you can think of other ways to justify it, then do that and factor it into your ask). If they want you, they’re at least likely to get you to the top of the range for the position if your ask was too high
Also, I would do my best not to mention salary off the bat. Talk about the job first and why you’re the best person for it. If the application asks for desired salary, put “open to discuss”.
And one final thought - DON’T offer your current salary info. if your state law makes it illegal to ask for this info. It doesn’t benefit you to give them this, so best to avoid it entirely
Looks like Florida House Bill 1077 prohibits certain employers or employment agencies from confirming wage or salary history “under certain conditions”, according to google. So looks like it’s prohibited in Florida, but you should go to the Florida State website and find House Bill 1077 from the Florida Senate and read the text for the full details
Ask for the range to see if it’s within your expectation. Ask for what part of comp is negotiable. Usually base is not in tech, but sign on, RSUs are. At the end it depends on your performance during the interviews
