You got 10k more than what you said you would take. I fail to see the issue.
This. Your negotiation started with that initial screen. Just take it as a lesson learned: Next pivot, do more research and ensure the low end of your range is overlapping/just above their high range.
You don’t....
Rising Star
You could say "while I did provide figure x as a target during our first call, I have since learned more about the role and responsibilities. Based on that new info, figure y is more appropriate."
Rising Star
Similar position - they gave me the top range of what I asked for in the screening
but later in the process found out I probably could have gotten more but felt I was in no position to counter
Hard lesson to learn - always start with the highest realistic anchor from the beggining
I’ve seen HR yank offers when candidates decide they want more. Unless there’s a really obvious story, I’d not risk it.
Ask for the core components of comp besides base. Find a place to poke, like, “ah - I see, the bonus range is lower than I might expect.” Or “hmm...I see the match is lower than I had thought”. Or “PTO seems to be less than I currently have.” That opens up comp as an overall package to the negotiation.
They called your bluff
Bluff—say you’re considering another offer that’s coming in higher. If they ask for it, say you had to sign an NDA before receiving the offer.
There’s no reason to lie.
Be happy. Take the money. More will come later.
When you gave your range, were you ever going to ask for a salary above it?
Also, look at the total comp as well and see if it makes sense for the role. If all aligns and you just feel like you left money on the table, I’d take what they’re offering as it’ll be difficult to quantify why you require a higher salary.
Also, if they’re already coming in 10K above the top end of your range, it sounds like you meet and exceed their expectations as a candidate and they really want you.
I’m thinking you might be able to say the benefits are not as good as you were anticipating and you could push for more
I dont think you should... but if you REALLY want to. You could try:
Thank for the generous offer, after finishing my interviews and with a better understanding of my responsibilities/role I would request $$$ since I will be doing:
A.
B.
C.
Beyond the initial role discussion.
If you atleast provide some justification other than "I want moar" - you're likely to have a more reasonable conversation. I'd be fully prepared not to counter though and stick with the original.
Had the same thing happen to me....they offered me the top of my ask. Can you really go back and say you want more now?
Go back and negotiate more. If you’re fine with the salary, negotiate other concessions (ex. Start date, signing bonus, etc.). The goal is to negotiate a package, not just salary.
