How do you nip convos you think are borderline inappropriate in the bud? With a B4 partner (my boss) so I can’t be too brash. Maybe just quickly change the subject or stop responding (via IM)?

I would just change the subject or dial down on the responses - that's the best way. If it was completely unacceptable (eg racism, sexism, bullying) I would call them out on it and say its's not appropriate, and deal with it that way, and if it kept happening, then may be HR but for me personally, HR would not be my first point of call.

Agree. First step don’t respond to behavior or engage- they should get the hint that you are setting boundaries. Then proceed to further action if needed.

like

Just tell them “that’s inappropriate”

like

You have to be bold. Otherwise inappropriate behavior isn’t going to stop,

While in a ideal world that sounds great, but a "that's inappropriate," may not always be the best approach. You may wish to ask HR for advice. You don't need to divulge any information you don't want i.e., a formal report against this person, but at least you create a trail and record of you reaching out about the issue. That's what I'd do. They can also advise on how to best approach.

like

I second this. Let a department like HR know that this is happening, and feel free to report daily, weekly, or whenever, complete with screenshots especially if these are happening via IM, b/c you are putting the company on notice that they've been informed and need to take action. Defense lawyers don't like it when there's evidence that shows a "consistent pattern of behavior" from their client. Oh, and keep copies of all of these partner and HR communications for yourself also, as firm electronic communications have a coincidental habit of disappearing and becoming irrecoverable when there's litigation.

like

Really depends on what kind of inappropriate. There are some that will be easy to defend and escalate and win, and some that already are a lost cause to begin with.

What would you guys suggest? Would it be detrimental to my career if I did not take up any certifications?
