How do you not feel guilty when protecting your work-life balance? I am annualizing about 200 hours over my billable requirement and accept new work when asked 99% of the time, but yet I feel guilty leaving the office at 4pm to do family stuff after billing a full day and being on track for all of my projects. Please help.

TBH I don't think there's any real trick other than telling yourself that you have a right to live your own life outside of work. We work to live, not live to work. You don't owe the firm every single part of yourself.

Same. I have a clear bright line (or attempt to have most of the time) of when I stop working and stop checking phone etc. unless there’s a closing, I simply say I will get to it tomorrow.

Just like there's no crying in baseball, there's no feeling guilty about being done with work when you're pulling your wait plus 200.

What is "guilty"?

like

You are making things harder for yourself. Get comfy with the temporary disappointment and don't think twice about saying no. Otherwise, they will use your guilt to their advantage without doubt.

Where is the guilt coming from? Do you think no one else is taking breaks or time away?

Likely getting an offer soon - already have planned vacation starting Tuesday until the new year. Do I give notice before I get the written offer/background check so I can leave before holidays but risk offboarding during vacation or give notice my first day back? At a startup so not sure if they'd want me out asap (cash strapped) or expect me to stay 2 weeks. I dont care much about pay, more about optimizing my time before next job (burnt out)

Do you all actually enjoy fed work?

Burnout is because you did something consistently for an extended period. You can do quick fixes like go on vacation, get some sleep, exercise more. But they may only help temporarily, depending on your level of Burnout.

Try adjusting your approach to work / life to a more sustainable, and ideally, enjoyable balance.

Curious about non-US attorneys: are you working the crazy hour weeks most of us in the US do? Or are your weeks closer to 40 hours? I hear a lot about the working hour caps, vacation requirements, etc in Europe/Canada. Curious if that flows into legal practice... or if it gets ignored. To clarify—I’m talking about BigLaw. I’m sure there are smaller firms with reasonable hours, the same exists in the US.
