What does 401k mean?
Hello, I have received an offer from Southwest Airlines as a Associate Technology Analyst with their direct college hire program. Will be graduating in May with a degree in MIS and also have internships experience as a Business Systems analyst intern. The salary compensation started off at 66,500 but was looking for the 75k range and they got back to me saying the best they can do is 68,500. They also have a 401k company match up to 9.3%. Do you think this is a solid offer for this job market?
Any Aon pension actuaries who could help my friend understand the hierarchy of titles? Let’s say my friend has 10 years of experience, FSA and EA credentials, was a consistently high performer over his career, what would his expected title be at Aon within the core retirement actuarial business? Thanks in advance.

I have children. My job just pays the bills.
Exactly. It's a job to me. Hopefully I'll be able to retire at around 50 and then chill. I won't be in big law until that age for sure, but I'm milking it for as long as my 30s will stand and then do something else for six figues.
Right, so here’s my take on the “meaning of life”, that everyone wants to know. If there is a meaning of life, it should be universal, right? One grand answer that applies to everyone. Well, that should also apply to the first humans, then. So, what do we have in common? Taking care of ourselves and family, living the best life we can, and doing good things while we’re alive. You’re good.
Here's the thing even factories and companies decay and die we're all not really building anything don't think about it too much love your family

Unless you start a practice and grow it. Or you start some other business with your know how. Plenty of ways to leave a legacy if that’s what you want to do.
Pro bono. Help a family gain asylum. Get a partial jury verdict thrown out. Do some good.
Oh criminal. Got it.
I look at my paycheck and realize not everyone can be the ceo
Why not build something outside of work (a family, art, a house, whatever)? It’s just a job after all. Just because you’re not building a factory or whatever doesn’t mean you can’t build something you’re proud of.
What you built was intangible. The relationships with clients you helped and lawyers you mentored. The lifestyle you and your family enjoyed. The prospect of a pleasant retirement without placing a financial burden on others.
After 40 years, you just sit there and collect a check while the juniors do all your work.

I used to wonder about that until I founded a title insurance agency within our firm. Really filled the bill for me of providing a “deliverable” to the client and offered me a chance to build a business from scratch.
I'm building a fund for retirement. And that's really all I want from this world, is to cover my needs, not be destitute in the future, and have a good family life. That's enough building for me.
I move in-house since I really missed the program building aspect of private practice. While I did contribute to the overall success of many program during my time at law firms, I get a much deeper view into things in-house and get to see the full life-cycle of the things I start.
Note that for some people, being so close to the business (and being limited to a single client) can be even a great negative to some people and it is important to realize and pursue what you will find most fulfilling.
Mind if I quickly DM you about your transition to in-house?
I’ve never had a desire to build something so I don’t have to overcome that feeling
I hope after 40 years you've done some investing and have some money to build SOMETHING. Also growing a family is as a noble pursuit as any.
