You don’t, it plays you. The real angle is get your bread, get your experience that sets you up for industry or your own startup, and leave.

Treat people well, perform at a high level, and be yourself. You would be surprised how that can overcome the corporate “game.”

Everyone’s experience varies considerably. Seek a number of mentors early who can coach you and vouch for you. Your performance early on doesn’t even matter. As long as you leverage them to help you improve, they can help you carve out a path.

Somehow get management to care about you. I knew someone who legit got departments into legal trouble but kept getting promoted because they ended up having the COO as a mentor. They always had problems they wanted someone's expert opinion on, and they chose the problems well. Like having a tricky situation with an important deal or another important person that really reeled upper management in on a personal level. Maybe they're born that way but I picked up some ideas that I have yet to implement and am positive would work...

You don’t play. Delivering excellence, work smart. The rest will come.

Work hard, manage up, solve your bosses problems (further visibility), make friends all throughout every organization, be a good person, learn to appraise opportunities, prepare for every meeting and key interaction so you don't miss those opportunities. Then when you're done, you'll have connections and relationships to hopefully transition to your next big goal or stepping stone
