How do you process the death of a coworker while still teaching? We lost a friend, colleague, and educator very unexpectedly this week and are expected to carry on as normal. We can’t go to the service because of Covid, but we also are grieving. Advice?

I got some good advice from a friend years ago who told me that if you bottle up your grief it’s not good and it can come out in other ways like illness. Do what you need to do for yourself. If you need to take a day off (or two) or whatever you think you need to do to process your grief, do it. You won’t regret it. Im so sorry for your loss. That’s so difficult.

We can’t take off because our district doesn’t have enough subs to cover how many people would need off. We’re begging for a virtual day (or week) but so far, no luck.

Conduct a meeting with your coworkers vis zoom or other to share memories, funny stories, or feelings about that colleague. A memorial dedication. Maybe give everyone advanced notice so everyone can get a picture or item to share. #teamsupport #teamspirit

😢😢😢 I am very sorry for your loss. Grieve as you need to and don't let anyone tell you otherwise! 🙏🏾

You must grieve. Dealing with loss is part of life. Rely on your colleagues who are going through it as well. Form a group and work together to get through it.😪 So sorry for your loss.

Sincere sympathy to you. Go day by day and try to do what your coworker would want.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I loss a coworker who was a very good friend almost a year ago. It was very difficult and still is at times. One thing that helped was doing something positive. We started a scholarship in her memory and collected from the teachers in the district. It felt good knowing she would have loved it.

Sorry for your loss. How are the students dealing with the death? Perhaps hold a zoom for staff and possibly students/parents to express their memories of the educator. The school counselor perhaps could organize. Students could do memories on google slides for the family. Just a couple thoughts. Be sure you take care of yourself, it is not good to bottle it up.

A few years ago 2 teachers in my school passed away within months of each other, one from a fatal car accident. It was hard, but we took a day for students and teachers to process their feelings and discuss what was going on with the help of grief councilors in the school building. It's definitely not a time when you can easily focus in on content. But taking some time to process and allow yourself to grieve and feel the hurt helps.

So sorry to hear this. We lost a coworker too and it almost killed us. We were told not to discuss it with the kids but I didn’t agree with that at all. Our district had counselors available for us and offered to step in to our rooms if we needed a minute. It was handled well but boy was it rough

I feel you need to be open with your feelings with the students. They are also grieving as well. This can be a learning experience for all. I would set aside a day and talk about the grieving process and you and others can share experiences.

Does anyone know of where to find remote part time work opportunities for older Indian women? My mom was a part-time after school teacher but has not been doing that due to covid (dad is high risk). I’m having her do some online typing lessons to get her to be a faster typer, maybe find her a data entry gig. She does not want to do nanny’ing / babysitting. She’s a great teacher though and she’s trilingual (Telugu, hindi) - anyone know of where to find opportunities?
