How do you redirect hyper-fixation? I’m trying to studying for a certificate. Instead I’ve found myself going down Reddit rabbit holes. I’ve already deleted social media/games/distractions off of my phone. I’ve already taken my medication for the day. It seems that I can get into a groove with just about anything but studying now a days.

Can you use the pomodoro 🍅 method? If you can stick to the timers, you can browse on your breaks. Or you can try to substitute the browsing behavior with something else like walking around the block, snacking, etc.

like

Seconding pomodoro with one caveat: I use it to get started and then ignore the breaks if I get into focus. If I don’t then I have to make sure to get up and move during the break (dance it out) but NO WEBSITES because then it’s over…
For me the dream combo is the rainy-cafe ambient noise page on noise cancelling headphones + pomodoro + closing all other tabs , email etc

First of all, don't push yourself too hard. Try making a schedule for your days in which you have some time allotted for studying and other times for procrastination. Make sure you hit your study hours and then you can focus on other things, but don't force yourself to study 24/7 because you will burn yourself out.

like

Thank you for the feedback. You are right, trying to cram in as much in a day can cause burnout. I feel pressured as I took the time off to do this. But today I broke it up into study slots. That helped as my brain knew there was an end game.

Try and figure out what your main triggers are. You mentioned Reddit, and that you've deleted apps from your phone, but are you finding other ways to access these distractions, like visiting certain sites on your desktop? You can't fix the issue until you identify and eliminate what's standing in your way. Also, what time of day are you studying? I find that tackling tasks that require deep concentration is better for me first thing in the morning than later in the day or in the evening. I'm just more alert and have more energy in the AM, which means I'm less likely to become easily distracted. You'll find your groove, just keep at it and be aware of what you need to work on. Good luck!

I trick myself into getting in the zone by telling myself I only have to work for 10 minutes, 20 minutes, etc. Once the time is up, usually (not always let's be real) I can keep going because I've got my brain to redirect to it for those 10-20 minutes. If those 10-20 are horrible and I barely retain anything and I feel awful, I take 30 minutes to do something outside of my brain like a walk/workout/shower karaoke sesh/taking a drive. Then I try again. Hyper-fixation can be such a b*tch, hang in there.

Additional Posts in ADHD Consultants

I've always had trouble with things like attention, focusing, and feeling constantly overwhelmed. I started to feel hopeless, feeling burnt out (even worse than my old job). I spend hours diverted when I know I should get work done. I decided to get an evaluation after learning a lot more about ADHD. I was diagnosed as Primarily Inattentive and they are starting me on meds immediately. Will things get better from here? Will, I finally become a productive human being? Should I tell my manager?

I suspect I have ADHD. I show multiple symptoms but am wondering about one specifically.until my promotion to manager I was considered high performer. now am stuck and can’t figure out how to progress. I am very good in executing and repeating what I know but have major issues in shaping an approach or identifying new opportunities. And if I don’t know how to continue I am just staring at my screen or finding distractions. Can this be related to ADHD or is it maybe just time for a career change?
