You should lateral to a firm where they give you billable credit for DEI. And tell your colleagues to mind their own business. You’re clearly on pace to hit hours. Ask them why they aren’t doing anything good for the community.
DEI work always falls heaviest upon DEI attorneys/staff. And it is frequently not viewed as important as substantive work. I agree with A1 that you should look at firms that give full billable credit for DEI work. Also, you should respond, "I spend time on DEI work because it is critical and necessary for the strength of the firm and in alignment with bar expectations. I would appreciate your support in identifying more people at the firm who can actively support these efforts."
Remind their dumb a$sses that clients support diversity.
org events and take time to mentor our first gen and diverse juniors. I think all of this is a really important part of the job, but certain partners and associates make snarky comments about me doing too much, and I never know how to respond.
I am first gen myself, (to the US, to college, and to law school) and know I would not have made it if the lawyers I reached out to back then didn't help me. So now I try to pay it forward. It doesn't feel optional to me. But I just don't know how to respond/stand up for myself when they say stuff and it's getting frustrating.
Keep recommending to everyone in house to only give out business to firms that subscribe to your way of thinking. Keep sharing these stories with in house counsel.
I think you should tell them to fuck off :)
Have you turned down billable work in order to do this stuff? If not, they can fuck right off. Even if you have, they can fuck right off lol.
I have literally never turned down billable work 😖
I guess I should clarify, my firm does give 50 billable hours for DEI, but I will probably hit about 200 hours this year. Not a complaint at all, I have no interest in cutting back my DEI efforts, just wondering do some firms give more credit than 50 hours? And/or recognize this time as more valuable? It just feels like my firm says all the right stuff, but when it comes down to it they're annoyed when we (the diverse associates) spend "too much time" on these efforts.
A1 - that would be amazing 🥹
I think you have to remember that their response is more about their discomfort with you visibly doing something they don’t believe in. They would be much more comfortable if you did nothing, like them. Your firm might say the right things, but do they do the right things. It doesn’t sound like they support what you’re doing so I question whether they do the right things, really.
