How do you stay motivated if you didn't get promoted? Was expecting to make SA so I'm super bummed (to make things worse someone on my project team who I pretty much manage got promoted over me😩)

Nothing wrong with another lap. Much better to kick a$$ for another year than potentially struggle at next level if you were on the bubble. Your career is a marathon, not a sprint. Work with your inner circle and set goals (stretch project / role at next level) and expectations so next year is a slam dunk.

Op, sorry to hear that. Life is not fair and neither is consulting. I would urge you to introspect. Self perception can be extremely deceiving.. was in your boat last year.. kept at it and continued to manage two peers who got promoted and were a level hire. I got over it in a couple of months but ridiculousness of the situation was not missed by either client or project leadership. I like to think that I have a 30 year long career and a year and here and there won't make any difference..

I was just promoted to director after three years as a manager, but I was passed over for manager way too long. I promise that it seems like a massive deal at the time, but in hindsight, it all works out. You can leave if you like but don't think that's your only option. Working at a massive firm means things don't always work out as they should at the time, but I like to think it all works out in the end. Big hugs though - I know it sucks right now!

EY1 said it. Recognize it's not about you or your consulting ability, but politics and the game. Shame, but true.

Generally, when I feel like I've been undervalued at Deloitte, I go into "Fuck you, I'm awesome" mode and go harder (and simultaneously make moves to transfer service line/practice/etc to move to a more supportive group). Thus, I'm firing my counselor and trying to switch practices within DD this year. Note: only works if you actually like and want to stay at the company (in my case, I managed to snag an awesome project role that has me super-engaged), otherwise "Fuck you, I'm outta here" is entirely appropriate.

The BS position was Exp Associate (EA) that they got rid of. @Op, I was in the same boat last year. Only just missed the promotion when a peer made it who was def not ready. I made SA this year. I was bummed for a few days. On Monday I had a talk with my current Director at my project at the time, we laid out a plan and I killed it (and he made Partner, and my Manager made Director). Just keep your head up, make a plan with people who will support you, and push forward

like

@op I'm in the exact same position. HR overruled the partners in my group who wanted to give me a promotion to SA and told them I need a third year as an associate. I don't think I'd be as mad if they gave me a legit reason, but blaming the cohort system is bullshit. Best of luck, @op, I definitely feel your pain.

But a pack of bananas and see how far you can put them for practice for next cycle 😂

Im considering leaving for sure, but no idea where to even look. Was so expecting to get promoted and stay here it's a shock

Also remember these are artificial levels designed to motivate you and make you work hard year round

It sucks, but I'll tell you what my first boss told me when I missed. Play the long game, don't let this inform a hasty decision

Well... It happened to me this year as well. It is just business, nothing personal. Just bail and find some other place with leadership who would value your talents more.

Can't agree more with P4. It's hard now, but it's just one year. Give yourself a couple of months. Tomorrow will be the hardest but gets easier. Set expectations and be happy you learned the political lesson early in your career.

like

Same thing happened to me @P7. Partner told me he thought I was ready but my group decided to promote no A2s (sigh)

Thanks guys appreciate the support! ☺️

Unless you love it here, there's no reason to stay if you can get a better job at the level you feel you deserve. It's in your best interest to look around at some other opportunities that will value you more than PwC does
