Years ago, my friend Alex needed to walk his dog. So he made a daily meeting (45 minuets) and just left the office. It helped that we worked in a huge agency that had too many process meetings. ps: he did this for years!!
I really think people will be more understanding than you think - almost everyone I work with is in therapy. You don’t have to disclose, but do you think your manager would be understanding if you told them you have a standing appt once a week at the same time, and you’ll show up early and work through lunch on those days? “Standing appt” = it’s pretty obvious it’s therapy (or something like it) and most people won’t say no to this. Will there be busy weeks when you have to skip? Probably, but it will work out! I wish you luck here, and hope you can prioritize it. Therapy has been so useful for me, and I don’t think it should be procrastinated or avoided if you can help it. Wishing you luck
I go at night but sometimes it helps to just be honest about it. I’m leaving for therapy, I cannot stay late today. And that’s it
Or you can see if they have evening hours sometimes I was able to see my therapist for a 6pm appt.
I would also love to know how people manage to do this
Try to find a therapist near your office. I block out an hour on my calendar and then just.... go. My appts are 1 hour, im usually gone a little longer to account for getting there/back. So I try to show up a few mins early once a week, and I pack lunch and eat at my desk on appt days. No one has ever asked (in 4 years), but if they did I’d just explain I took an early lunch. Are you watched so closely that leaving the office for an hour would be hugely disruptive? Or is it that leaving the office at all is off limits? Most agencies these days seem good about allowing for errands during the work day, for responsible employees - but maybe I’ve just been lucky
I have such terrible anxiety that I think that honesty may be the best policy
Some therapists have morning hours. I do 8am once a week. Getting up early sucks. But it’s worth it.
I understand your concern... sometimes it does make that day at work a little harder than a normal day but I’ve gotten pretty good at compartmentalizing. Overall though my life is so much better with therapy that I just deal with it and going in the morning was really the only option for me. I can’t just leave work easily. Also on the flip side, I actually like mornings because my mind is still clear from all the day’s annoyances. Sometimes I worry if I want after work I’d end up focusing on all the more trivial things that had happened that day, if that makes sense? Instead of the bigger issues.
Good point. Thanks for the perspective/sharing.
I say that I have a weekly standing appointment on [day and time] so I'll be in around noon. You just say it. Don't ask permission. After trying different times and different agencies I've found that making a late morning appointment (luckily my therapists office is pretty central) and just coming into work a little late is most convenient for me and my team. More convenient than super early morning appointments (I work out at 6 and so don't really have time for therapy before work), lunch appointments or late night ones (sometimes work meetings and fires would make me late or totally miss a session)
We have a very small creative team so if I'm out for an hour+ it is very noticeable. I think a major part of it will be finding someone close enough that just traveling to their office gives me anxiety.
Thank you for the tip, I think that could could actually help a lot. People here are busybodies but if it seems to be an issue, being honest-ish could prove helpful.
@freelance, do you find that going in the morning affects your performance during the day? That would be my concern.
