Omg! Our AP teacher had her HS AP seniors do this.
We got SOOO creative! Someone did the Cook: he placed a fake, bloody ulcer on his knee, acted the role as the poem was read, but as a conclusion threw his knee ulcer in his pot of gruel! Eeewwww!
I’m not sure how creative your students can be, but that has been an incredible memory for me... I remember the Canterbury Tales most from that....😁
Wait... what if you require each Chaucer character to be re-enacted as an equitable Disney character??? IDK, I figure California teacher=Disney stuff (all the time!) 😉😂
I have them take on a persona to join on the pilgrimage. They then tell their tale. We have a story judging contest to see who wins.
I do other things also. Some are extensions of the concepts of the tales. Example, we look at women’s rights with wife tale.
I have the kids write their own version of the CTs, but they have to mock groups in school such as jocks and science teachers. We read them out loud and they’re usually pretty funny and right on.
If you have Harry Potter fans, one of the tales ties to the Deathly Hallows from the book. That’s how I got my sophomores to read some of the tales. They were then tasked to find how other stories were similar to other modern tales.
I have them write the CT for people/groups in school. They do things like The Jock, The Nerd, etc. It gives them a chance to make fun of a group in a CT way. Some are right on, and we always get a laugh out of it!
