How do you tell international students who come to you for informational interviews that their command of English is not good enough for consulting in the US without sounding like a dick?

“You seem to have good background, but your verbal communication skills need to improve, to be competitive in the marketplace. “ Make sure your criticism is not about their accent, but rather about their command of the English language and vocabulary.

I think it is better to be honest about this though if it is going to hold them back. But agreed it shouldn’t be about accent but actual command of the language

Yea - not about the accent but more around being grammatically correct. I hear a lot of a/an/the in the wrong place or things like "most best". If you are saying those out loud, chances are pretty high it's going to make it into a deck and no one has time to be checking every slide for grammar.

I straight-up tell them, and tell them they should apply in their home countries. In the Anglo world, they're competing against native speakers which makes it even harder.

Given the level of communication skills and English language capabilities often witnessed here, then they may fit in well.

This was just poor planning on the company’s end from a title standpoint.
