3 months later he will not even remember you
I think if you explain you have little kids and looking to spend more time with them 9/10 partners will understand. They get associates telling them they want more money elsewhere and understand so I’m sure they’ll be understanding of your situation!
“I’m so sorry. It’s not you, it’s me”
Send them the ‘ight imma head out now’ Spongebob meme. 10/10 would recommend
If the partners value you and your career they will be more than understanding. I received nothing but positive feedback from the partners I worked with at KPMG when I left the firm. They are used to people leaving for every reason and I wouldn’t expect you to experience a negative reaction from anyone at the partner level.

I actually didn’t use work life balance as a reason because I knew they would try to make accommodations to make it work so I just said I was ready to try something new and found the right opportunity. Hard to argue with someone who just wants to try something new.

Yup. Flex schedule, clients closer to home, permanent work from home, BS internal role...the rebuttals didn’t stop until I said I just want to try something new haha.
How could you do this to them!
Just say you’ve enjoyed working with them so far and have no choice but to be away for the time being. Don’t make it sound like you’re away for good and always leave the doors opened in case you want to do audit later (once kids are easier to manage/have grown up etc).
