How do you tell partners you're leaving without burning bridges? My coach tends to give you a bit of grief anytime when you're wanting to go in a different direction other than audit. I'm sure I'll get pushback from the other partners I work with. Leaving for a better work life balance. Audit schedule is challenging to manage with little kids. The new clients I got put on will keep me just as busy as I was before.

I think if you explain you have little kids and looking to spend more time with them 9/10 partners will understand. They get associates telling them they want more money elsewhere and understand so I’m sure they’ll be understanding of your situation!

If the partners value you and your career they will be more than understanding. I received nothing but positive feedback from the partners I worked with at KPMG when I left the firm. They are used to people leaving for every reason and I wouldn’t expect you to experience a negative reaction from anyone at the partner level.

I actually didn’t use work life balance as a reason because I knew they would try to make accommodations to make it work so I just said I was ready to try something new and found the right opportunity. Hard to argue with someone who just wants to try something new.

like

Yup. Flex schedule, clients closer to home, permanent work from home, BS internal role...the rebuttals didn’t stop until I said I just want to try something new haha.

funny

How could you do this to them!

Just say you’ve enjoyed working with them so far and have no choice but to be away for the time being. Don’t make it sound like you’re away for good and always leave the doors opened in case you want to do audit later (once kids are easier to manage/have grown up etc).

Any thoughts?

Is anyone familiar with filial responsibility laws? I have major doubts that my in-laws have enough saved for retirement / it seems they are planning to rely on SS despite currently living a pretty lavish lifestyle (brand new house, luxury cars, routine spa appointments, expensive dinners, etc.).
