They have another cog ready and waiting.
Literally just did this. It was honestly really hard. My advice would be to have your “elevator pitch” ready to go for when they ask your reasons for leaving. The ones who support you will understand!
Just did this too. It will be okay! It was a bittersweet day but your supporters will be excited for your new opportunity.
Don’t stay if they counter, data shows it almost never works out within a year or less. Congrats on new role!
I didn’t know this!
People always overestimate the effect on their employer and coworkers of their departure. You will be forgotten very quickly. In fact as soon as you give notice you become a ghost...
I agree. These days no matter if you’re doing the leaving or in the staying camp, work is brutal so all that extra time usually spent working 🤣 just sayin’

If it is a small firm and you really bonded with the other attorneys, I would give someone a call and have an honest chat. If it’s a big firm where you’re just a fungible billing unit and you hate everyone there, email to HR with relevant partners CC’d is fine.
I had to do it in an email. I was at a <10 atty firm with 2 partners. I couldn’t get one or both sat down for 5 minutes to put in notice in person, so I did a “x is my last day at the firm. I’ll continue to work cases and prepare transition memos so my departure does not impact clients.” I was the one attorney most heavily in one practice area. The other guy in my practice group hadn’t really worked those cases.
As for my fellow associates, I had been talking about jumping ship for so long, they didn’t believe me when I finally did. 😂
Can they match/exceed what your new firm is offering? They may be willing to offer a lot to keep you.
Have your turnover, paperwork, 401k, everything ready including your letter of resignation and have your stuff packed up. This way no matter what you’re good to go. And boxes go directly to your new firm.
Be straightforward and professional. Don’t burn bridges. With common lateral movement, it is likely much more traumatic and stressful to you than the firm.
