We used to only go on dog friendly vacations. For 11 years. There are some dog friendly resorts, and of course dog friendly cabins and such. It's fun and makes vacations more active - hiking, swimming, etc. And obviously driving-only vacations. No flying. Not worth the risk.

I usually have a friend or service walk the dog when I travel. Depending on the type of vacation I do take her with me, but only when driving. Flying with a dog seems like an unnecessary stress along with being inconsiderate of other passengers and insulting to people that truly need a service animal.

Just have someone watch your dog. Travelling with a dog is not fun and unless your vacation specifically has dog specific activities planned, it's better to just have someone you trust watch your dog. Or get your dog some staycation using Rover or some other dog watching service.

like

I use Rover when I fly and my sister won't take my dog. If I am not flying, my dog goes with me. I drive a lot of places so I can take him with me.

like

With flying if the dog is small enough to fit in a carrier under the seat then that is very doable. You have to call when you buy your ticket and declare you have a dog. If it's too big, you can get them registered as an emotional support animal and buy an extra seat, but that is more hit and miss and I think airlines are cracking down on that.

Let’s not suggest that...that’s so detrimental to service dogs and true ESAs

In the same boat - luckily have friends who have volunteered (or say they would) watch him for a weekend. Otherwise I’ll have to find a service to watch him. As friends have told me, boarding isn’t the end of the world, your pup will be okay!!

like

My friends and I watch each other’s dogs. Our pups get along and it’s one extended playdate. Makes me feel better going on vacation knowing they’re in good hands. We miss them, but they’re in an environment they love with people they adore. Works well for us!

like

We either bring our dog if we are driving and it’s a dog-friendly vacation (outdoor oriented) or we leave him with a friend or a Rover if we fly or need to leave him. Having a dog makes travel more expensive since we often have to pay for a Rover but that’s just part of the deal of having a dog. Doesn’t keep us from traveling - just adds some additional logistics and cost.

like

We usually board our family dog with the rescue organization where we adopted him from. It helps that he’s been there before and that the owner is already familiar wi the his needs. Now that I have my own dog, I plan to use Rover’s boarding service. It’s definitely way cheaper than an actual dog hotel. Might be a good idea to even pay for a couple of nights before the actual trip just to give the boarder and my dog some adjustment time.

Have been lucky to have lots of dog loving friends who don’t have their own pup and love having a week or two to “borrow” the dog. Otherwise family and/or rover/sitters. With any new sitter I always ask for references and then have them come for a meet and greet for us and the dog first. Then if there’s one I like I’ve reused them for multiple trips!

On a vacation right now with my dog! We have taken him twice - drive only yet. Yes, it is restrictive but it’s fun! Are there any boarding services in around NY/NJ area that are recommended for 7-10 days?
