How do you typically handle time out of the office for something like doc. appt, financial advisor meeting, house appt, etc.? As an associate do you put time on your calendar, email partner, or something different?

I put time on the calendar, but label it is a private event so nobody can actually see what the event is. I account for any travel time (e.g., if you have to drive to a doctors appointment) in determining the length of time to block off. Folks then see that I have a conflict and am unavailable, but personal details (if I’ve even entered any) are omitted. If somebody tries to schedule a conflicting meeting, I just say that I have a conflict. It would be rare for anyone to really probe what the conflict is.

Block calendar off, then cancel whatever the outside engagement is as people push for calls. Repeat.

I do the exact same thing as A1 and it’s worked well in both small and big firms. Sometimes I’ll mention the appointment as I’m leaving the office (for example, I’ll tell my assistant I’m heading out to the dentist and will be back around X time), but I never feel obligated to do that.

I block out my calendar but I usually don’t tell anyone unless I expect a conflict (aka we are at the point in a deal where we are working 24/7). Usually a simple “will do” suffices until I can get back to my computer.

Block off calendar. Tell no one. I have a standing appointment to go horseback riding on my calendar that could literally be anything. I just say I’m not available during that time.

Block off on my calendar and inform my supervisor who has an office next to mine

Yeah block off your calendar. Please don't tell me about it.

I make a calendar appointment saying I’m OOO and send it to whomever I’m working with at the time. They can accept or not but then they’re on notice. At my previous firm we had a staffing person so I’d include them too.

Calendar it as soon as you know you have to take that time.

Block off calendar, making sure it shows as “busy.” Only tell people if they try to schedule a conflict and don’t accept “I’m not available at that time” as an answer.

Is it better to wait until promo before switching to other firms? Applying to MBB but worried that if I get the offer I’ll end up switching right before I get my promo from Deloitte. I would likely reset to entry level at MBB either way but the pay would be a substantial bump from my current pay (even after promo). I’m in my second year at Deloitte out of undergrad.
