No one* cares or should care as long as you give sufficient notice, remind folks, and know nothing really major is happening that week (for example, a trial) that you and you alone need to be there to handle. For most juniors and mid levels, there is nothing that can’t be covered by someone else with advance notice. And one week isn’t terribly long.
I don’t feel like you should ask for permission because it isn’t something you need permission to do. Instead, I would just tell the partner or partners you work with that you plan to be on vacation with no (or very limited) email access from ___ to ___. (I try to build in an extra travel day so you aren’t immediately swamped the second you get back.) And then say please let me know if you see any issues. If you think there might be a significant task that would be on your plate during this window, you can note that up front that you will get coverage on it or will make sure it’s handled before you leave.
Once the partner clears it, and assuming this is how it works at your firm, I send a shorter version of this email to the entire team or teams I am working with (as BCC) noting that I will be out of the office from ___ to ___. You then reply all to this email a few times as the date comes closer to remind everyone that you will be gone.
The reason I left a * is there is some small minority of partners who don’t respect vacations or will still email you during vacation. I steer very clear of those folks. But if you work with one of them, then the above might not work. In that case, you should still do everything above but also look for another place that respects its associates.
Agree with everything said above. BCC your partners/teams with a message like the following: “I will be out of office without email access from DATE to DATE. Please let me know if this presents any issues. I will follow up with a reminder as the dates approach.” Send this now and then send a reminder WITHOUT the “let me know if this presents any issues” line a few weeks out and then again the week before.
