How does a firm like RSM compare to any of the Big Four? For someone who is looking for an entry level Audit Associate role, but has aspirations of transferring over to a more finance focused role such as Valuation or TAS after years of Audit experience, will any of the Big Four always be a better experience and resume builder than RSM?

I would go big4. A lot of my friends that went midsize from undergrad, went to midsize because of promises of work life balance. They never got it. The difference in hours between big4 and midsize on average is about the the same. So if you’re working the same hours, might as well go big4 where they will pay you slightly more and you get to put big4 on your resume. Best piece of advice (and this from someone that transferred to consulting after doing audit). Get an audit internship at a firm and network you a** off to get a full time offer in Valuation or TAS. Don’t listen to recruiter that tell you it’s easy to transfer after a couple of years in audit. Transfers are highly competitive and political. You’re better off trying to start your career in other service lines than banking on a switch from audit.

P2. Hit it right on the head. When I interned I was able to shadow teams in advisory. I was going to ask try to get a full time offer in one of those groups but someone from HR told me, if I did that there was chance I wouldn’t get any return offers. At the time that seemed like to much of a risk to take. I had to do a year and a half in IT audit, and honestly I hated every second of it. If I could do it over I would have risked trying to go straight into consulting after my internship. Only thing worse than being unemployed is being stuck in a job you hate.

Go big four audit and then look to switch to another firms TAS practice after a year or two. Don't mess with the internal transfer, firm politics make it difficult. Also you get a pay bump when you switch firms.

like

Based on other posts I have seen, yes. I myself have seen a lot of job postings that say “big 4 experience preferred.”

like

Yeah it's already hard making the switch within a Big 4, and their groups are larger. RSM will be even tougher.

like

I did a transfer from audit to consulting at RSM and it was fairly easy. I did my due diligence and I was a solid performer, but still, no pushback from anyone.

likehelpful

This is not always the case. Speaking from my own experience.

like

Go B4 first, then do whatever you like afterwards. I did B4 audit, now at RSM in advisory.

like

I mean there’s always the option to do a rotation/transfer with TAS/Valuation services within RSM. Also recently had someone in my office move to a B4 TAS group. So it can be done for sure. Obviously B4 names look better on a resume no matter what type of role you would be seeking but there are options here as well.

My numbers were regarding NY.

Getting into TAS at RSM is much easier than Big 4. The rotation program isn’t difficult to get into as long as you show genuine interest.

RSM is teaching you data tools as well - there’s a full alteryx training program.

Internal transfers are preferred- in my experience - because we want to retain quality employees. That said, there has to be a business case and both parties have to be on board. Audit may not want to lose you, but if you’re clear that you’d be leaving either way, that should get the point across. Getting HR involved will help you navigate. That said, a voluntary transfer isn’t going to get you a huge pay bump. Most likely would be lateral.

The consulting pay bump comes as part of your first year-end after transfer.

I have a question for those at Amazon or any other FAANG organization. How does your company view transfers/relocations.
