How does anyone actually find a new job anymore?

I'm so desperate to leave the current company I work for but I have to balance being the sole earner and figuring out what values and beliefs I'll sacrifice for the paycheck. And that's even assuming I can get an interview.

Anyone have any tips? Or ideas? At all??

After you figure out your values, strengths, interests, etc. and you hone in on your target jobs and/or companies and industries, it's a matter of being found. Over 80% of jobs are hidden... They are not listed in job boards. With that said, recruiters use a scanning system to find qualified people,. So it would be advantageous to have your LinkedIn profile 100% complete and updated..and more importantly optimized with industry keywords that will make you visible. Align your resume as well. Like other people have said, network your ass off, especially on LinkedIn. Get it ready for searches and to make a great first impression to recruiters and hiring managers.

I am in the process of creating an upcoming free webinar this month. I will show you how to makeover and leverage your LinkedIn profile and make sure you are optimized for job searches. DM me if you want details.

I'm not aware of international unfortunately.

I've been desperate before looking for jobs, and at the beginning of my career even had to work 3 jobs, sacrificing everything else to support my older parents, and myself as we didn't have ANY finances to fall back in. Having said that, I'm also quite unmotivated at my current job and have been looking for something new for the past 3 years but haven't found a good fit, and that was and is a LOT of job hunting that I've done.

If you are questioning us about this as the sole earner, you're not really desperate; you're either having a mid-life crisis, feel like you deserve better/stuck, or simply overwhelmed. Your time would be better spent figuring out what you want in life and mapping out how to get there.

Hey, it’s not about age - there’s a concept known as a ‘quarter life crisis’ now.

It’s not even a crisis - it’s Simply people wanting more meaning from work.

Discovering what this is takes a work. new choices and roles will help you get more clarity on what lights you up.

But there are solid foundations you can lay, to head in the right direction of more motivating work.

If you want to talk it through let me know.

Hey, these are great questions to ask. It’s not about finding a life without struggle but figuring out what’s worth struggling for.

Identifying your values is key. It’s also a good idea to identify your super strengths (things you’re both good at and enjoy using).

It’s not an overnight process but clarity on both of these can help find work that aligns, so you can find more meaning and purpose in work.

I’ve got some tools that can help with this, if you’d like them let me know, I’m happy to share them.

Good luck!

Network your ass off. If you're applying for a large corporate job, and don't have a referral, you're a drop in the bucket and 99.99% chance aren't being selected for an interview.

Reach out to people on LinkedIn, it shows who used to work for your company or who used to go to your school and leads for a great soft intro "hey was researching xyz role, and saw you made a similar transition blah blah blah". If you have good soft skills, they're likely to get you a referral or interview plus you just grew your network. Pay it back down the line for someone else

I was laid off a few years back and a recruiter friend of mine told me if I really wanted to find a job I needed to be applying 10 jobs a day for weeks just to get a few call backs. At week 6 I got 4 interviews followed by 4 job offers. Just apply apply apply. Apply to jobs outside your norm if you really want to change companies.

like

At the time I had 6 YOE and was only applying to very similar roles because I had low self esteem corporate/job wise and didn’t realize I could do more. Now I apply to positions I’m maybe 20% qualified for and always ask for more money and negotiate bigger sign on bonuses and 90% of time it works. Having that situation happen early on in my career was a blessing as it’s taught me how to job search and negotiate.

You might have some luck including some value oriented keywords in your online resumes/profiles. Plenty of companies are hiring for personality before skills.

I added the word "progressive" to my Indeed profile last year and ended up landing a job at Indeed. I didn't even apply--was contacted directly by a recruiter. (I know this is anecdotal, but I think the general theme is that your resume should reflect what you're looking for, and not just what you're capable of.)

Interesting idea! Thank you!

Never sacrifice what you value and believe in for a paycheck. It is not worth the effort.

To find a new position, first, be sure that your network of friends and relatives know that you are in the market.

Get active on LinkedIn and use the Open to Work (private setting for recruiters only).

Attend networking events - even if virtual. Start to post articles and work product to get noticed.

Be sure that your resume is current and you are registered with the appropriate job boards (Indeed, ZipRecruiter, etc.)

Yeah I've been doing all of that. Guess I'll just keep at it. Maybe something will happen!

Wdym values and beliefs?
Like you won’t work for a perfect fit financially and WLB wise because of the beliefs of the company? Get over that mind set you’re not a monster if you work for Facebook or chick filet it’s a job

Leverage your personal and professional networks. Most people find new work opportunities through 2nd or third level acquaintances. If you are in a leadership position or a specialized field you might be able to leverage a head hunter.

Have you applied? I get a bunch of interview requests. The market is pretty good right now. The challenging part can be finding a role to fit salary criteria (at least that’s been my struggle).

like

As someone who applies frequently for roles that are on the career track I seem to be eaten alive by the algorithm monster and rarely speak to a human.

I've gotten input from people who I hold in higher professional regard than myself and have given my resume multiple face lifts and still get nowhere.

Any tips besides buzzword roulette?

So there are 3 things I heard: 1) you’re not getting interviews 2) you want a career that pays you but is also aligned to your values 3) you are short on time since work is keeping you busy to find another. I got these reading between the lines, so not necessarily accurate, but please let me know.

Assuming they’re correct, I’d suggest a calendar management system and a resume system to actually help you navigate this. I have a couple of things that I use in my side gig as a job search specialist. Happy to share.

I can see you are getting good advice, as well as being hounded by a couple of idiots. Well, let's try to tilt the balance. Start with reading Designing Your Life. A simple book, with some great direction and exercises. DO the exercises. It will help you a lot.

For the AWS SA role, what sort of technical depth do interviewers expect? I'm getting the vibe that a deep understanding of infrastructure and networking is required (e.g., talk us through a best practice auth flow, what is the role of a reverse proxy, layers of OSI model, give example of sidecar pattern) is required which is quite different than a GCP sales engineer interview (with qs like what is difference between object and block storage, what is HA and DR 🤣)

Hi Fishes,

I have an interview tomorrow for an SDET position (2+ yoe) with a product-based company.

This is my first interview after college, I was just wondering how do you guys deal with salary negotiations without looking greedy.

I know it's kind of foolish to think about salary without clearing even 1 round of interview, but still I was curious.

My CTC is 6.5 LPA right now, how much hike should I expect and push for?

PS. Any SDETs who have any advice on interview prep?

Thanks!!

I need some advice:
I recently started a position as a senior writer. I jumped from a copywriter role with this new position. It has not been a smooth onboarding at all. My manager moved off my brand before I could even start working. I was doing a bunch of sitting around for the good part of 2 months! Now since there’s a budget issue they want me to take the spot of the freelancer that was the lead writer with only one real week working under this freelancer. Weird to anyone at all?

Got an offer today...

Applied for a mechanical engineering position. Salary range was 65-75k a year. When asked about salary during the first interview, I replied 70k is my number. Later I found out that since it's a small company no health benefits would be provided, but 10 PTO days are included. Had I known about the lack of health benefits and 401k match I would have increased my bottom.

The offer today was for 70k but now I'm not sure if I should try to negotiate for another 2-3k?
