How does anyone make transition into PM if the current company/industry I am in does not have this opportunity? I really want to make this move but it seems like other posts are against taking courses/MBA to make this transition. Help!

Are you in sales now? Maybe you could go from sales to product marketing, then product management? Depends heavily on the exact company and how much tech skill you need, but this path could work.

I agree that transferring to marketing in the meantime is a much easier transition with much more $$ involved than trying to start v fresh on the PM ladder.

Start a company. I wanted to get into product. Started a mobile app that got acquired and then transitioned into a proper product role. Don’t spend your money on school, invest in a company. Building and shipping a product is what PM’s do.

I don't think it's bad to take courses - if it's for actual skills and information to be able to do the job. MBA definitely a waste of time/money. First, find the field you want to do it in...

Current industry doesn't have the opportunity - what industry? Depending on the company you might be able to make it the opportunity. Keen to hear more!

I transitioned from agency to ad tech. Definitely possible. Publicis even had a product role in their company. Idk where you are but some agencies also have them in house. Product really varies as well what you do in one company could be totally different to another.

Check out Product Gym- it’s a bootcamp that guarantees you a PM job offer (or multiple offers) at the end of the program. Made a huge difference for me, ended up with 5 offers

I romanticized being a consultant while working in industry. Then I got a consulting job, a couple promos, and now the idea of consulting just makes me roll my eyes. I love the pay and I don’t mind working hard, w/ long hours, but the “business of consulting” is exhausting (e.g. maintaining utilization, selling engagements, 6k iterations of a deck, etc). Great company, great co-workers, and interesting engagements.... I can’t be the only one feeling this way. Time to exit or is this a phase?
