The companies can’t look at everyone’s applications. They use ways to narrow it down. Thats why referrals are so important. MBA is another way to narrow down. MBAs (competitive schools) have already been through a rigorous screening process for intellect, prior success, leadership potential, and personality. They have also chosen to invest heavily in themselves. Hence, it is a very attractive and logical pool to source from and concentrate efforts in
Shows ya wicked smaht
The dirty secret of b-school is that it’s harder to pivot than people make it out to be.
For some roles (consulting, banking, some general management roles), your pre-mba experience doesn’t matter much and they’ll take anyone.
For some places like pe/vc or certain industry roles (product management) breaking in without relevant pre mba experience is very hard.
Absolutely but it’s not a magic bullet and you need to be realistic. If you spent 4 years of your career post undergrad working in CPG marketing and you have no CS or finance background you’re probably going to have a hard time getting a job as a google PM or in private equity. Might be obvious to some folks but I think there are definitely people who come in with unrealistic expectations
For a lot of the really prestigious stuff (PE, VC, MBB) your prior experience will be a heavy factor.
What you can do to mitigate is engage in pre-MBA internships, network your ass off, and use your MbA internship to get experience
If you go to top school, prior experience won’t be heavy factor for MBB
Your resume follows you to b school. It doesn’t disappear.
You’ll have to add to it during school or show how your prior experience contributes in some way.
If you're smart enough to get into bschool, then they assume you'll be smart enough to pick it up.
As M1 mentioned, MBAs are viewed as a high quality, rigorous screen for being decently smart.
There is a much wider range of pre-MBA experiences so they scrutinize more.
