It’s just a data point for the HR gatekeepers tasked with counting beans. If they’re forcing you through an automated system and having you click boxes to apply, it’s mostly for show and 10 times out of 10 the job has already been decided in-house and through personal connections. You’re just another line of data to justify the hiring decisions they’ve already made. Now, if you’ve been hired and asked to fill out those boxes, that’s another discussion altogether.

That makes more sense than any answer I have seen so far. Really hoping to hear directly from HR manager to corroborate

In what context? If it’s post-offer, I don’t see why you wouldn’t. If it’s pre-offer, that strikes me as a bit odd but is probably something the agency’s HR tracks so they can show that pro-rata by application numbers they don’t disproportionately hire white or male applicants. I don’t think it will hurt you to leave it blank if you feel like you’d prefer not to answer or have an uneasy feeling about it, bc whatever discrimination is or isn’t going on will be rooted out at the Google level vs via those answers which are for bean counting

If you’re a white male, you’re better off not. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’m not looking for Likes. I’m looking for comments that specify your position.

It's for government reporting. I've never been part of a search that looks at that data, or even has access to it.

Correct. It is illegal for the company to use this to inform hiring, unless it’s to open a conversation about bias.

I used to be scared to put down Hispanic, so I left it unanswered. Now I do it based on how progressive the agency is.

@EM1, that’s what interviews are for, to see what someone’s potential is. I know industry people with Masters degrees that don’t know $#!t about advertising. But they still easily got in because of their degrees and white race.

Supply it or they figure it out after you start. The Gov needs it as others have said, plus Clients ask for it on big pitches.

Its bs. It was supposed to enable eeo for companies but instead made them sexist and racist so they look good in front of the government. It should be abolished so people can move forward. Implicit bias will always exist, adding information just fuels the fire.

I’m not sure why some people still think there’s a mythical process by which those with hiring power scour these databases and say, “Ah, yes, I’ll give the job to the candidate who marked Disabled Vet, we need a diversity credit, that’s the ticket.” If you’re the candidate filling out the box, that job is already gone and promised to someone else. You’re just filling in data for the sake of someone else’s tracking purposes. And that person has zero hiring power.

like

Ok what about disability. I have PTSD but never check the disabled box because it’s not something others can see all the time and I am afraid of discrimination since there is still such a stigma to mental health issues.

Companies can qualify for certain tax breaks/grants if they can prove that they hire employees with a disability. They should also be using that data to ensure they accommodate you if you advise of a disability. So in your case if you need a quiet space or a support animal the company needs to make sure you have what you need in order to function at a reasonable level. If you don't think you'll ever need accommodation etc its not crucial for you to share that.

The question isn't mandatory. Its meant to help the business identity what the demographic of their employees is. In cases where the business has contract with federal entities they typically require that the business prove they give equal opportunity to candidates across the race and gender spectrum. Equal Employment Opportunity Census' have to be filled at a particular time each year. Submitting your information should not hurt you.

The funny thing is that advertising agencies never publish these numbers like tech companies do. Ad agencies don't seem to want to be held accountable as other industries. We gotta do better people

Never really understood the point of avoiding those as a simple search will tell them what you are.

If you are comfortable self-identifying, it benefits the company to do so. Hard to prove diversity without it - employers have very few options to legally ask about the factors that truly make a workforce diverse. Proving diversity helps an employer gain insights that it is also impacting business, and thus should do more active recruiting to bring different perspectives to the table. A more diverse company also unlocks new business opportunities as well because companies want to work with agencies that promote diversity.

I’d love to know the answer to this. My ethnicity is unlisted and I can’t identify accurately, so I don’t. Always wonder if it’s an issue....

No, it's not.

Dentsu 1 has the correct answer. This is also something you can easily Google more about if curious (not being snarky).

Those aren’t “skills” I’d bring to the position, so as such it’s none of their business, so I don’t fill that section out.

My job let’s me choose between NYC and SF. I’m a young guy - from a dating perspective is one better than the other? I know people talk about the gender inequity in SF but my sense is during the pandemic a lot of guys have moved out of the Bay Area to cities like NYC, LA etc.

If your law firm has no attorneys who are female or people of color, I’m not referring cases to your firm. It’s 2020, do better. Diversity needs to stop being seen as “a nice thing to have” and it needs to be necessary to stay in business. Diverse perspectives are how law firms succeed, I want to see more firms that understand that.
